A review of Under Cover by Jenna Gunn, a novella in the Not Over You anthology:

As bachelor number two strutted out on the stage, Rachel Lawson nearly forgot to breathe. She knew that man. The one who destroyed her all those years ago. Rachel couldn’t put all the blame on him as she had never told him her true feelings. But neither did he. Anger, fear, and lust filled her resolve. After what he did, she never wanted to see him again. So, Rachel did what any sane person would do. She ran the bid up to show him exactly how she felt.

Hunter Roman still thought about the one who got away. He knew he should have done things differently. Truth be told, he was younger then, self-absorbed, and terrified of his feelings. Even now, Hunter could remember the woman with clarity and knew he had been wrong. But he had more things to worry about than her.

Jenna Gunn writes with a passion blending her characters to provide the perfect romance. A novella in the Not Over You anthology, Hunter knows just the thing to calm the woman he desperately wants back in his life. Her anger seems permanent, but fate may have just played the final card.

It’s her last year of high school. She had plans. Now everything had changed because she behaved stupidly. She had to grow up and leave her dreams behind. Katherine McCullough had no idea what she was going to do. One thing was for sure. There was no way she would do what Nate expected. She was a good Catholic girl.

It was love at first sight. Anthony Marcelli toppled Katie and refused to allow her to run off until she was feeling better. Ant is wise beyond his years. He has goals and dreams to succeed. He is willing to take responsibility for a child he did not help create but loves unconditionally. Ant’s not only Katie’s best friend, but he also wants her as his partner for life.

Katie and Ant show up frequently throughout the stories of her siblings. In the final book, Lydia Michaels is ready to tell the sweet story of how they met. It is heart breaking when Katie announces her pregnancy to her parents while Ant takes the news without judgment. And then we see the love and support both families show as Katie and Ant begin their path to happily ever after.

McCullough Mountain is one series where you really get to know all of the characters inside and out. Lydia makes it feel like they are your long-lost friends. It’s a family that is close and loves each other for who they are and not who they should be. Two thumbs up for a series that makes you want to continue reading and sad when the final page is reached.

She propositioned him to celebrate her divorce. Then she ran.

Becca Stevens had a terrible marriage. That was hard enough. What made it worse was her ex had affairs in their marriage bed. And he seemed to enjoy other women more than his wife. Top it off that she did everything at home. With the divorce, nothing changed except now she was classified as a single parent. Even with a few days to herself, Becca refused to make time for a relationship. She was devoted to her son, Hunter, who was on the autism spectrum. Her life revolved around schedules and being the best mum possible. Unfortunately, this included denying herself the happiness she deserved. Along with the man she came to depend on and love.

He never believed anyone would put him first.

Before Becca, it was the Braydon McCullough show. He simply put himself first, middle and last. It was his world, and everything revolved around Braydon. Then he met Becca. Nothing would ever be the same for him. But could Braydon change his outlook?

An exciting look into the world of autism is both intriguing and sad. Kudos to Lydia Michaels for taking on this subject with tact and sensitivity.

He was supposed to be going places. Then he hurt his knee and his football career was over. Now Luke McCullough was home logging just like the rest of the family. He hated it. Even worse, his cousin graduated, and he was expected to show up at O’Malley’s to celebrate. That’s when Luke met Tristan.

The realization of a change from within began to grow. While Tristan never had a doubt, Luke was terrified of the unexpected feelings he had for another man. It’s an ongoing struggle that Luke had to work through on his own. Yet, it certainly would have been easier with the support of his family. Tristan could not understand why Luke would not talk to his family. They were supportive and loving. Unlike his! Sheilagh McCullough is a wild child. She’s smart. She’s the life of the party. Except when boredom sets in. Then Sheilagh does nearly anything and everything that could be dangerous. The real problem is that Sheilagh is lonely and feels like everyone ignores her unless she is doing something wrong. Now that she is at college, classes are easy for her. Almost too easy. Sheilagh has a genius IQ so the classes should be an easy A. For Sheilagh, anything less than an A would be humiliating. So, when she turns in the essay paper for Philosophy and receives less than expected, Sheilagh is angry and confused. Then something unexpected happens.

Dr. Alec Devereux noticed Sheilagh right away. He knows she has a brilliant mind. Yet she refused to excel and use that mind to expand her thinking. It wasn’t just what she could accomplish. Alec wanted Sheilagh and felt more alive than ever before just looking at her in the classroom. That made him happy. Still, he worried. Alec is the teacher. They could get into trouble. Even more, than how her family reacted when she brought him home.

Lydia Michaels digs deep into the philosophy for knowledge is power and understanding human nature is necessary. Both Sheilagh and Alec grew as prominent issues forced both to take a good hard look inside. A mistress of words, Lydia broke down walls opening up a world of beauty Alec and Sheilagh needed on their journey to a happily ever after.

He wasn’t thrilled to be auctioned off for a date he didn’t want. Taylor Jennings was a busy man and had no interest in the outcome. He was only there because it was a fundraiser for a good cause. Yet, Taylor figured he would be bid on for one of two reasons. Either they wanted to pitch a proposal to him, or they were hoping to be the next Mrs. Jennings. Except once he took his eyes off his phone, he realized the woman standing in front of him was wearing a discount gown (ewww!) so she may be thrilled to be taken out to have a special treat. He’d be willing to do that for her.

Taylor didn’t know Samantha at all.

Samantha Matthews was done with the world of wealth and luxury. She had walked away from that world and hoped to never be sucked back in. Point being, Samantha was only at the bachelor auction because her best friend asked her to bid. Except Samantha bid on the wrong billionaire. He was going to do some work. So, Samantha told him to pick her up in the morning.

Taylor’s reaction will shock you. It shocked me. That was just the beginning of the one date they promised each other.

I really wanted to love this book.

Once upon a time, way back in high school, Kelli Foster tutored a boy in French. Now divorced, Kelli is a physical therapist and the owner of Healing Hands Physical Therapy. Kelli believed she was over her teenage love of Wade Guidry, but it all came roaring back the minute he stepped into her office.

Wade Guidry had once been smitten by his tutor. He loved his job as a Navy SEAL, but a devastating injury resulted in a medical discharge that sent him home to Saddle Creek. His tutor is now his physical therapist and Wade has no idea how he will hide his reaction being so close to the one person he has always wanted.

As I said, I really wanted to love the book. I was first put off by the description. “My career as a SEAL is over....” Granted the actual career cannot continue. Yet, I feel Kat Baxter missed an opportunity. Not with Wade’s injury but with his mental health. “My career as a SEAL is over...” is telling. Wade is struggling mentally.

Designed as a short story, readers simply do not get much information. We know it’s a second chance for Kelli and Wade. Yet when Wade visits Kelli, there is no foreplay – nothing – that gives any indication of the shockingly abrupt transition to come. Kelli and Wade do have a history not fully explained. Yet every interaction leaves a bad taste giving no indication of like, let alone love, for the other. Humiliation is scored with retaliation. And then WHAM!

Simply put, after reading show more other Kat Baxter books, expectations exceeded reality. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see characters from other Saddle Creek books included in this story. Kelli and Wade needed a happily ever after and deserved to get their own. Unfortunately, Baxter missed the mark to make their story great.

Our Veterans put their lives on the line for us. Many times, we do not treat them with respect for their actions that have went above and beyond the scope of their duty. It’s not only our Vets. Our active duty military members deserve the same respect. These stories are simply a part of what these men and women do for our country. Evan Meckler is about to have a reckoning.

Kat Nakamura was left at the altar. Silas Flynn wants payback. They have a common enemy. All that is left is for them to band together to destroy one man using his own games.

They created an itinerary, along with a set of rules with the understanding that Silas and Kat would date for one month while Evan is in town. While many of the outings end successfully, Kat and Silas slowly begin to enjoy their dates. Their personalities complement the other as their mental health is tested. As the days turn to night, Kat begins to want more than the rules allow while Silas slowly begins to show his vulnerability. They seem to be a perfect match. But when the mission is accomplished, will they still be together?

This is an excellent story. Silas and Kat have two separate distinct personalities. They will end up being the best of friends or complete enemies. Neither expected to find the love they had been seeking. It’s not often a book builds the suspense methodically and with great thought. For the hero and heroine to understand is unique. For a nurse to not recognize a crisis but only to respond to injury struck me odd.

Roxie Noir did an excellent job portraying the mental health issues. From panic attacks to PTSD, none of the characters are defined solely by their diagnosis. This, in itself, warrants a 5 Star rating because many times fictional characters end up in a stereotyped mantra that doesn’t define the entire persona.

The California chapter of the Devil’s Barbarians needed assistance. Being fairly close, Rigor Travis volunteers to make the trek from Arizona to California to sit in on a meeting. Although females usually are not welcome, Rigor’s sister, Belle, is a secret weapon. She did not have a choice, but Belle really did not want to make the long drive. She would rather be home reading her romance novel.

Wyatt Jones was making repairs to the chapter van when the Phoenix guys rode into the compound. He took one look and decided that girl was his. Little did he know, Belle had trust issues. She also had a couple of bull-dog protectors along that were not going to make it easy on Wyatt. But he was willing to take that chance.

With some cheesy pickup lines, a near disaster, and some smoking hot sex scenes, Wyatt is definitely cocky. He also shows throughout that he is a trust-worthy person. Many women, including Belle Travis, would love a man like that. Fans of Lily Harlem and motorcycle club romances will love this quick read.

Neither regretted their actions and now each is miserable. Yet with every action is a reaction. And a consequence.

Lydia Michaels allows readers to feel the passion, the uncertainty, and the loss of their show more love. At times, the story is heartbreaking. The mental struggles are real. The questions agonizing. What is right? What feels right? Is it better to love and lose the most precious thing than to never have loved at all? Both struggle with their decision. Yet it is Colin who must make the decision that will change his life forever.

An ancient feud was put to rest with a handshake. A handshake each year from a member of each family cemented the truce. But this year the Davies were late. Or so Madeline Montgomery hoped. With minutes to spare, it was not to be as her nemesis rode into sight. The new Earl of Powys.

Tension simmers amongst their wants. Maddie could not trust although she desperately wished to know more about the mischievous boy who once taunted her that is now very much a man. Including herself on a mission meant for one, Gryff’s gentlemanly advances turn to more as they are outed with Maddie unchaperoned. But it can never be, for a Davies and Montgomery could never be civil to another. Or could they?

Bateman tells a sweet tale of a family feud put to rest with the unlikely union many fathers would not approve. Yet Maddie and Gryff are about to embark upon a very un-regency match of old. The first book of The Ruthless Rivals set the stage. I want to read more from this talented author.

Eduardo Lopez was now el Rey. The King. He was the second son. The only one left to take over. He shouldered the commitment but would rather not remain. In this, Eduardo has a conflicting personality. He tries to be the man his family wants him to be. Yet seems to want something else altogether. The question is: which personality will win?

Take his cousin, Valentino. Valentino is not a nice man. He is trigger happy and happily has flunkies cleaning up his messes. Valentino has some crazy ideas and believes fiction over truth. Unfortunately, Eduardo does not take action quick enough. And therein lies some of the issues. Especially with the family business.

Ana Maria was won in a card game over a century ago. She was allowed to go to the United States and participate in the student exchange. But it is time to come home. Her parents were pressured and knew Ana Maria would be taken. However, they hoped to have some time together before Eduardo takes her as his own. The night she turned eighteen, they arrived in the midst of the party.

The one good thing is that Eduardo is different from most of his family. His thinking. His actions. His thoughts are scattered between trying to be the person he wants to be and what his family insists he become. He sees Ana Maria as a person and wants to know her better. But when family points out he is too attached, he creates distance and becomes cruel. I felt that Eduardo should have stood up for himself and not allow his family to dictate his show more personal life. For the most part, it seems Eduardo truly likes Ana Maria. He shows this in numerous little ways. In that, I want to believe that Eduardo will eventually realize Ana Maria is the only one for him. At this point, it would not be a surprise if he bows to the family and takes a wife of their choosing. I do hope differently since Cuban King is not the end for Eduardo and Ana Maria.

Life can be evil. Families together out of fear. Villages threatened. Fiction and reality can be similar and sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. One on hand, I truly enjoyed reading this book. On the other, I spent as much time on the review as I did reading. That said I was furious to see an unexpected cliffhanger. Up until those last words, I was invested. Now the most I can say is that P.A. Thomas is a wordsmith at setting the scene. Until it no longer remains. And instead becomes a nightmare that will continue.
