Archie has been waiting a long time to be able to follow his dad along to his work as a midnight taxi driver, but little does he know his dad is in fact an interstellar taxi driver and Archie is his soon to be co-pilot. Great bridge chapter book for a younger reader, fast moving and engaging.
Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation (Jane Addams Award Book (Awards)) by Duncan Tonatiuh
This book tells the story of the Mendez family and their fight to educate their children in a school of their choosing. This story takes place in the mid 1940's 10 years before the Brown vs Board of education case, but has not garnered nearly as much attention. Would be a great book for teaching children about the importance of education and of equity across all facets of American society.
Ellray is tasked with making it through the week of school without getting into a fight with the school bully who is not making things easy for him, he does however, have a giant carrot as the end of a string. If he can do it a trip to disneyland is in his future, can he do it?
This would be a good book to challenge an early elementary school reader or to engage a student that may not like to read all that much. The graphic nature of the book gives students a reference for what they are reading and the silly and very fart-centric story line speaks to kids.
When Daisy went on a walk with her owner and red ball another dog accidentally pops it. She gets very distraught but is instantly perked up when the same dog the popped her ball gifts her a new one. Teaches kids about doing the right thing when you make a mistake.
A fishing expedition isn't always what it seems, in this lovable story a boy and his dog go on a journey for the word FISH. Running into slippery and mischievous letters along the way.
Great for use in the classroom, children get really into the story and want to play along while also learning something along the way. Love the illustrations as well.
Great book to teach children about the many different types of ways the shapes (specifically round ones) can show up in everyday objects and nature.
This was an interesting book in that you have to read it even in your head in the style of the Cajun people. I found myself having to slow down and re read many passages. This would be a fun read with kids because you would be able to try and duplicate the accent while giving them a new slant on an old story.
This was a helpful guide for basic sing language skills. As I have never learn sign myself the information was all new to me and I found myself very interested.
This is a good fit for the younger set, as there are many pictures to guide their reading while at the same time provides enough text to provide adequate learning opportunities. Hopefully the kids reading this book realize that Luke was in extreme error in running off on their parents like he did. Would be a good teaching moment if read to children.
Jeremy wants nothing more than to have 'those shoes', the ones that all the fastest and the coolest kids have. When he finally gets his hands on a pair they don't fit and he gifts them to a classmate who needed some new shoes. This is a great book for teaching children about empathy and about how friendship and doing something kind is more important than any cool pair of shoes.
The child narrator of the story walks us through the realities of her neighborhood's struggles, while simultaneously asking around the neighborhood for 'something beautiful'. She learns that while objects may sometimes take the place of it, the real beauty is within. And within that beauty is the power to make change.
Follows our hero Pete the Cat along his journey through the neighborhood losing buttons along the way. This teaches children about numbers and about the idea of subtraction. Great read (and sing along) for younger students,
Everyday Milo goes to school and plays with his friends, unfortunately, most of the time he gets stuck with a character in the pretend game that he doesn't like (knight instead of a king, etc). His mom points out to him that there are many advantages and disadvantages to being different characters when you play but that the most important character that you play is being yourself. When you stay positive and don't let other people bring you down then they end up wanting to play your game.
Pete the Pig found solace in his life of predictability until one night an elephant named Pickles from the nearby circus ran away and broke into Pete's house. After returning him to his circus, pete begins to wonder if that was the best thing for Pickles. He breaks Pickles out of the circus and the two of them go on ridiculous adventures and become best friends.
This is a good book to teach kids that while it may be fun to pretend, in the end we are generally comfortable and happy in the environment that we are brought up in and there can be comfort in that. Moka the dog learned this lesson the hard way when he ran away from home to wander the woods like a wolf would.
This is a fun book that points out that even if people are telling you something ('that pest couldn't possibly be a pet') if you know if your heart that they are wrong then you should just do you. Buzz shows everyone that a 'pet' is in the eye of the beholder.
Bossy Bear cannot stop telling other creatures what to do until one day Turtle came along and pointed out to Bossy Bear that he didn't need to be so Bossy.
My classroom has been learning a lot about insects lately, and this has been a favorite of the kids. While the poems themselves contain a lot of information and great verse I believe the strength of this book lies in its illustrations. I found myself spending almost more time looking and talking about the illustrations because they are wonderful.
This is a fun book in order to teach kids about seasons or months of the year. Has great illustrations that show the reader some of the things that can happen during each month and what the world around them looks like during each season and month. By using poetry, a student can see the rhyming involved on each page.
This book has been a favorite of one of the students in my class because he is obsessed with Pirates. It tells the story of young Jeremy Jacob and his wish to run off and be a pirate. Luckily, there are some scurvy devils around that need his help. Jeremy soon finds, however, that being a pirate isn't all its cracked up to be.
A book that teaches children about one of the jobs that may be in their community. A baker is important because most everyone needs bread products and tasty treats every once and a while.
Badger and the Honeyguide work together in order to find and eat the honey that they both desire, one day, Badger decides that he is going to go back on tradition and eat all of the honey for himself instead of sharing.
Cool story that a lot of children can relate with. Joe has always been known as a bit of a sloppy kid, including many sloppy hobbies and habits, however, when his family come down with the flu it is sloppy Joe to the rescue.
Louis needs to work on controlling his outbursts in class and at home, calling them his 'eruption'. He wants to be good, but just can't hold it in. After he has the same thing happen to him, however, he learns a lesson about how it feels to have the same thing happen to you.
This book is important to read to children to teach them the difference between a real apology and just saying 'sorry' . Charlie has made other kids unhappy with his penchant for being untruthful. Kids need to learn this lesson.
Another book that teaches children the importance of listening fully to what other people are saying. No one in Bear's community wants to listen to actually 'why' he has a problem, they just all want to provide their own solutions without waiting for his input.
This is a fun traditional tale that would be beneficial for talking to children about the animals that populate the arctic region. It would also be good for teaching kids size ratios as every animal he eats is bigger than the one before. Great for showing the food cycle.
This is a great book for teaching kids why it is important to listen. And that even if they are not listening, it doesn't mean that they are bad, but that they should just work on their listening skills.
