Sehr unterhaltsam und auch spannend. Eine richtige Entdeckung für mich. Werde alle Steeler Strasse-Krimis lesen. (zum Glück führt unsere Bibliothek alle)
Very entertaining. A nice mystery with enough twists and turns which keep you guessing while allowing you to go through all the clues yourself. With a lot of self irony and references to all the classic crime novels.
I am a little disappointed of this book. The premise sounded interesting, reviews are great, and it starts as a nicely done spy thriller in the tradition of Len Deighton, but the story develops very slowly, especially in the middle. So it took me quite some effort to go through with it. At the end, it gains again some pace, but kind of anti-climactic as it is not so complicated as it pretends to be during the whole set-up which takes up most of the first 300 pages.
Private detective novels don't get much better than that. Complex, noir, crisp. Entertaining and gripping.
Very disappointing! Was more like a badly written Bond movie tie-in, but of a not very exciting one. The worst that can happen with a thriller is to be a boring thriller. It's so formulaic that it hurts, even in such a formulaic genre like James Bond. Mr. Faulks seemed to be more interested in testing how many cross-references to the classic Bond novels he can place, than an actual interesting story. If you like character driven spy thrillers read Len Deighton or Charles McCarry, if you like James Bond read original Fleming or the books by John Gardner.
Unfortunately, not as satisfactory as the first two books in the series around the forensic anthropologist David Hunter. Rather repetitive. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good mystery with a lot of twists, but if you know the other books by Simon Beckett, not really surprising anymore. But since it refers a lot to the previous books, it's better to start with Chemistry of Death which is really exciting.
A fun read, but not really thrilling. You learn a lot about art and art thefts which is quite interesting, but since there are too many individual characters, there is no one particular you really care about. Story wants to be more complicated and a twisted than it really is. Given that this is his first novel, I give Charney some credit and look forward to his next novel.
