Normally I love anything by Martha Grimes, but it had obviously been too long since I had read the novel that preceded this one. There are so many references to previous stories and characters that it made the plot in this latest novel too confusing to follow. For that reason, this is really not an enjoyable stand alone novel in my opinion.
I don't understand how I've been reading mystery and suspense, esp. by British authors, for decades and not stumbled across Laura Wilson's work before. This is a great read, albeit quite disconcerting/uncomfortable at times. I stayed up waaa...y too late in order to finish this.
This is the first of Meyer's novels that I've read, but it won't be the last. I really enjoyed it, "couldn't put it down" during the last part, as others have noted. I know very little about South Africa, so that facet of the book was really interesting as well.
stayed up till 4 am to finish this. One of those books where you don't really want it to end. Really liked the story and her writing style. Will be looking out her next novel.
My teacher read this aloud to the class when I was in 6th or 7th grade, and although I am over 50 now, I still remember it with great pleasure. I reread it years ago to my own children, and was dismayed when they were not as fond of it as I had been.
