2nd reading. 1st 2000 (+/-). I forgot that I had already read this novel, which explains why I’d forgotten so much of the plot. I have read all of the John Corey series the most recent, “The Maze” 2022.
Written at the third or fourth grade reading level. Boring.
So many holes in this story it is silly and insulting.

D. D. Warren is arrogant, has a nasty personality; easy to dislike.
Sad, very sad. Held my breath the last several pages as the ending became apparent.
After Daniel discovered Lexie is actually not the "real Lexie" but an undercover police detective named Cassie he fails to tell his housemates, all of whom Cassie is investigating along with Daniel. But let's Cassie continue her investigation posing as Lexie. The story was already a stretch. At that point it crashed and burned. I've read all of French's books, only this one was a one star.
Disappointing compared to books one and two in the trilogy.
This was my first Louise Penny novel. I purchased it based on the ratings it had received here at goodreads. I didn't find the story engaging or the characters interesting.
One example as to why I found the book disappointing: Near the end of the book Gamache and his party of searchers need information about one particular substance of interest. They're on a ship heading up the St. Lawrence River to one of Canada's most remote areas. Although they have not previously engaged with any other passengers on the ship they miraculously decide to talk with one young woman whom they quickly discover is a science teacher with a wealth of knowledge about the very substance Gamache and his fellow searchers need information about.
