The prequel to the silverwing trilogy, Darkwing takes place during the reign of the saurians, giant reptilian creatures that ruled the earth. Our story starts with Dusk, the world's first bat. From the moment he was born, he was recognized as different. The beasts had made a pact, that they would hunt down and kill all saurian eggs. When the last egg is destroyed, Carnissial still craves flesh, and is shunned for that. Carnissial attacks the homeplace of Dusk, and he must fly to help the rest of his family. Why is this strange? The rest of Dusk's family are chiropters, and they can only glide.

Another amazing book by Kenneth Oppel. Intruiging and fantastic are some of the few woeds that come close to having the ability to describe this book. Even if you haven't read the Silverwing trilogy, this book is just as good as a standalone. A must-read for those that read all the time, or only read enough books to get by.
Matt Cruse is back with a adventure that reaches beyond the skies. Matt and Kate de Vries are asked to embark on a journey never attempted before. They were asked to go to the stars and into space. After a truly horrific training camp, the liftoff to the stars can begin. Many perils await Matt and Kate.
As Matt Cruse trains for the Air Academy aboard the "Floatsom", he catches sight of the "Hyperion", the first sighting of the abandoned ship in forty years! No stranger to adventure, Matt, his friend Kate de Vries, the pilot, Hal, sail off to find the "Hyperion", which is rumoured to be full of treasure. Before Matt takes off, though, he is attacked by pirates seeking the same treasure. Once Matt sets off to find the "Hyperion"" , he finds that the pirates have been following via a tracking device. As more unfolds and the plot thickens, things become apparent that you wouldn't have geussed before.

This was an exellent book, not just because of its great plot, but also the satisfaction it gives you when you finish. It's as if Kenneth Oppel was Matt Cruse, and he was only the middle man, conveying the information between Matt and the book.
Soon after the events of Virals, Tory Brennan is back for another adventure. The virals are struggling to control their powers, but an even bigger danger looms. The LIRI research lab is closing, and if Tory and her group doesn't do anything, they will seperate, left to deal with their powers on thier own. when roumours of a pirate treasure start floating around, Tory's adventurous side takes over, leading them through hundred-year old traps, riddles, and unexpected twists wherever the Virals go.

This book suprised me. The author, Kathy Reichs, has done a great job of translating her experince with the Temperance Brennan books to a younger audience, and bring something extra with her. Well thought out, fast-paced, and the unexpected happening when you don't even see it coming. This book is a must read for all of the young detective and mystery fans out there.
The fourth book in the Septimus Heap series. Trouble stirs with Tertius Fume added to the mix of characteres already present in the series. After Snorri and Nicko went through the glass, they ended up in the past. That information will play in later. Tertius Fume, ghost of the scribe vault, has a plan that may threatens to end the apprenticeship that Septimus Heap has with Marcia Overstrand, ExtraOrdinary Wizard. The plan is to send Septimus on a dangerous Queste, from which no appprentice has ever returned. Will Septimus succeed on his Queste, or will he perish like all others before did?

This book series has done an amazing job. There have been no signs of strain or slowing down. As most books go, there are those that just tell a story. Then, there are those that show a story. They talk about details, but there is also enough excitement to keep it going forward. With Queste, I would say that this book is about 75% of the way to the second choice
The third book in the Septimus Heap. The substantial ghost of Queen Etherelda the Awful has been released. the ghost of her pet, the Aie-Aie, is causing a plause, and Septimus is the only one who can stop it. Unfortunately , Septimus has been kidnapped to five hundred years ago! Working as an apprentice to Marcellus Pye, Septimus is working to perfect the elixir of eternal life and youth. Upon his return, Septimus has learned enough about Physik to be able to create a cure for the plauge that the Aie-Aie has created. In addition, the ghost of the ancient queen has been resealed into the painting from where it came.
The second book of the Septimus Heap series. Septimus is now an apprentice of the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand. Simon Heap, now a Darke Wizard, kidnaps Jenna. When Septimus rescues Jenna, Simon uses the incomplete Flyte charm to chase after Jenna and Septimus. With the charm and Jenna, Septimus retreats to Aunt Zelda's. There, Septimus completes the Flyte charm, and gets his own dragon.
The first book in the Septimus Heap series. When the queen and ExtraOrdinary Wizard get shot, nothing will be the same at the castle. As Jenna, the saved princess, lives with the Magykal family of the Heaps, she goes on an unexpected adventure on her tenth birthday. With the return of the Necromancer, DomDaniel, Jenna flees the Hunter with her family and Boy 412, a member of the Young Army. when they arrive at Aunt Zelda's, the family, Boy 412, and the current ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand, make preparations for the Hunter and DomDaniel. When DomDaniel is defeated, Boy 412 finds out that he is actually Septimus Heap, seventh son of a seventh son.

I thought that this book was excellent. There was a little bit of everything, and a lot of magyk. There are hundreds of thousands of authors out there, but this one is definitely in my top fifty.
The fifth book in the Last Apprentice series, Tomas was been able survive this long. Now, though, a new danger is lurking. A witch named Bloodeye has been roaming. Tom is sent to Bill Arkwright, another Spook. The tactics of Arkwright are extremely harsh, but they do work. As the training with Bill continues, the Spook goes missing. Tom finds him, and gets an unexpected ally.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Other than that, this book is very decent. Joseph has done a very consistent job so far, which is a daunting feat. The detail is at its best it's gruesome. The suspense is enough to keep you going, but not so much that you have to go to the end because you're dying to know what happens. Altogether a very fine read.
Sherlock gets another visitor. This time, the visitor's sister gets killed, and the father is the prime suspect. Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Watson, go to solve the mystery. They have to use stealth and intellect to solve this perplexing mystery. As always, Sherlock finds the killer. This time, though, it was backfired. The father used a snake to kill the sister, and planned to do it again. Sherlock startled the snake, and it bit its owner instead. So ends another Sherlock Holmes mystery.

Conan Arthur Doyle has passed, but his stories live on. Even now, Sherlock Holmes is still a name that is known everywhere. This book is different because the murderer died, which doesn't usually happen in the stories. Even so, this is a magnificent book, perfect for a rainy day. Not jut rainy days, this book is a perfect read on any day if you just want something to read that is small, yet satisfying.
