No character development, too many sexual innuendos for YA. The boys were all so sexual and I just don't find a guy with a harem suitable as one's love interest in YA. I also found a few typos and spelling mistakes. However, the plot was original and I liked the new paranormal elements. Might grab the next book in the series because I think Holly Black is a talented author.
Should be 4 1/2 stars.
The only reason I didn't give it five is because Velvet seemed so flat compared to Roseberry and I always think another character shouldn't steal the main character's spotlight. This said it was an enjoyable read with potential for more. The writing was solid, the voice was believable. And while the story wasn't earth-shatteringly original, I liked the humour and would give a sequel a try.

Beautiful writing. Granted, in places it was a bit too hard with too many unknown words for my kids, but they enjoyed the story about a little hobbit who leaves his treehouse for the first time to see the world. Recommended to the young and old.
Beautiful writing. I would've wished for a bit more character development as the reader doesn't really get a glimpse into the character's head, motivating factors and what really makes her keep her profession secret from her brother. Other than that, the description is beautifully done. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the likes of I Capture the Castle.
I don't know where to begin. I don't think there's a more unrealistic book out there. Everyone is so 'Christian' and boring. By the end of the book, everything turns out fine, everyone's happy and God has solved all the problems and conflicts that seems so impossibly hard to face at the beginning.
I have nothing against Christian fiction, but I'm not keen on letting my children read this fluff and believe the world is nothing but a pink cloud and everything always turns out as hoped/planned/expected. It's just not the reality.

I loved it. It's one of my favourite books of all times because it's funny, has a great, original plot and lots of hot guys. The writing's beautiful with lots of depth, witty dialogue and picturesque description. It reminded me a bit of Sophie Kinsella's style but with more action, better dialogue and lots of paranormal elements. The romance part was sizzling hot. And Lucifer's daughter Cassandra and Aidan's brother Kieran had me rolling on the floor with laughter.
The paranormal elements were very inventive and didn't focus on the vampires alone. I could see the Shadows and their queen (aka Exorcist kid) would play a bigger role in the books to follow, which is awesome since I love reading about voodoo and dark magic. I really liked Aidan and hope there's going to be more of him in the books to follow. Nothing beats a story with a hot, Scottish hunk.
I'll be the first to buy the next book in the series.

My son couldn't stop laughing. I found the story cute and inspiring. Some scenes, like the one in the airplane, are hilarious even to an adult. Hilly was my favourite character, but my son obviously preferred Thom. I hope the writer will write a sequel.
