Hey everyone! It's a new month, and it's a hot one! (Unless you happen to live too far North or in the Southern Hemisphere.) Our theme this month is to read books by authors we consider "hot." Clearly, this is a matter of taste, so I hope we'll see a variety of both male and female authors. :)
I cheated and took a look at last year's hot author challenge in order to come up with some suggestions.
Joe Abercrombie author of The Blade Itself

David Mitchell author of Cloud Atlas

Jasper Fforde author of The Eyre Affair
I must have a trend in the type of guy I find attractive, since all these men seem to have the same shape of head? ;)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie author of Half of a Yellow Sun and Purple Hibiscus

Sadie Jones author of The Outcast

Dalia Sofer author of The Septembers of Shiraz
And.....apparently I find dark women attractive. Someone else please come along and add other pictures so that the thread won't lean so far towards my tastes. :)
By the way, I have finally settled on Surreal September for next month--That can include fantasy, magical realism, and (I suppose) some other types of contemporary fiction. :)

I will honour the theme with a book by Gregg Hurwitz:

Other 'hot authors' I've found are

Richard Mason - My personal favourite so far, but I can't find his books, but maybe somebody else thinks he's hot enough to give it a try ;)

Jens Lapidus - Apparently THE hottest author around, but he's not really my thing... To sleek...

David Mitchell actually isn't that bad either... And I still have The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet lying about somewhere... Hmmmm...
6Britt84
I kinda stuck with male authors... Not that the women aren't good-looking, but really, there's quite a lot of hot female authors, whereas all the male authors seem to be gnomes, so I figured I'd try to see if I could find any decent-looking male authors :P
Plus, I have a *coughcough* minor preference for gorgeous, sexy men ;)

Most of the authors I like look like gnomes, too, but they're older (or deceased) which would explain it...
...besides, I'm not that fantastic to look at either! ;)

I think it's a thing... If you want to be an author, you have to look like a gnome... Especially if you want to be a good or great author...
Hey, fuzzi, I'm not fantastic to look at either, maybe we should try a writing career ;)

David Mitchell would be much more my type if he had black hair...but I was trying to be unbiased when I chose the pictures. I only realized afterwards that the men STILL had a bias (face shape) even though I purposely included a blonde. No offense to blondes...I just like my men dark. ;)
ETA: I've always wanted to be a writer, but I don't look much like a gnome. Not that I'd seriously consider myself hot, but gnome-like I'm not. :D

@9 lol :D
@10 I SO agree with you on David Mitchell! If his hair would have been dark it would have been so much nicer! But, aside from the hair, he is pretty cute. My men are also dark-haired...
Btw Anne Brontë was kind of hideous, if we can trust the pictures; she looks so skinny and unhealthy... And lopsided in many pictures, but that might be the artists' fault.

I like authors for what they write, not for how they look.
Some people adore Steven King's books, but he sure is, well, not good looking (imho).

Nope, King is not the prettiest guy around... And sure we read them for their writing and not for their looks, but that's also why I'm kind of enjoying this: of most authors I like I don't have any idea what they look like, so it's fun to look up pictures for a change.
14The_Hibernator
Well, I haven't quite figured out which hottie I'll read...but I hope to finish A Tale of Love and Darkness this month...Amos Oz looks like he might have been hot at some point:

15Britt84
I think in the left picture he's quite handsome still. Bit old for me, but I agree, he probably was handsome when he was younger.
16DorsVenabili
Colson Whitehead:

And I should add that he would still be one of my favorites, even if he wasn't freakishly handsome.
And is the younger Herman Melville a stretch? Perhaps, but here he is anyway:

Arundhati Roy:

You know, I totally see the Herman Melville thing. If she trimmed that beard a bit...there's potential!
18DorsVenabili
#17 - Yeah, it's kind of a metal beard, if you like that kind of thing. I say it could have used a trim.

Hmm. I guess I wouldn't put most of the male authors from my planned reads this month into the "hot" category, so my list is mainly female.
Sarah Addison Allen - The Peach Keeper

Heather Gudenkauf - These Things Hidden

Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Jennifer L. Holm - Penny From Heaven

Henning Mankell - Faceless Killers

What a great idea for an August theme! I quickly scanned all my planned reading for the month, but talk about gnomes!

This is Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind
So, I've had to turn to women for my hot August Author:

Louise Bagshawe, author of Tall Poppies

Hahaha... Not exactly what I meant when I was calling male authors gnomes, but yes, I guess that one is also a gnome ;)
I also have quite a pretty lady on my reading list:

Liza Marklund...

China Mieville - I think he is absolutely gorgeous *big grin*. I am not a fan of sleek man. This one has character.
23Britt84
Ow, he IS goodlooking... He looks a bit angry in your picture though, and you've left off his gorgeous body, which is a crime... I think he would look amazing with his shirt off ;)
24drachenbraut23
Yes, Yes - and he has got lovely tat's as well, and the pic's of him where he smiles - he just looks like a cheeky boy.
*drool*
Currently I am listening to The City and The City - I have to say quite hard going (language) - I experienced the same problem when I read his Perdido Street Station. Although I absolutely loved his Embassytown and Kraken.

And here we go, one more for you Britt *wink* - not shirtless *sigh* - but you definately can see - he looks great.

Lia Habel isn't exactly my type since she's a she, but she's certainly pretty enough and I am reading her debut novel Dearly, Departed at the moment....
26The_Hibernator
To be honest, I don't like sleek either...but I'm not a fan of the tough-guy look. I can SEE that Mieville's attractive...but I like the scruffy or nerdy guy look myself. :)
Like Ted Dekker

*sigh* He's dark, he's scruffy/nerdy, he believes in the power of love *sigh*

Or Neil Gaiman!

He's dark and scruffy/nerdy anyway...I don't know anything about his personal morals though :p

Here are a few more (IMO) hot authors:

Alix Ohlin, author of Inside, the first book I'll read for this challenge

Madeline Miller, author of the 2012 Orange Prize winning novel The Song of Achilles

Dr. Atul Gawande, author of Better and Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science

Jenny Erpenbeck, author of Visitation

Jhumpa Lahiri, author of Interpreter of Maladies, The Unaccustomed Earth and The Namesake

I've been a bit reluctant to mention Iris Chang, author of The Rape of Nanking and The Chinese in America, because of her death by suicide. However, her beauty is without question.

Wow. I didn't realize Madeline Miller was so pretty! And I don't think death-by-suicide should exclude people from this thread. But she wouldn't fit in an emotionally-well-balanced author challenge. In fact, I have NO idea what author would, though I'm sure there must be many. :)
30The_Hibernator
Phew! after much struggle, I've decided. I will read a Ted Dekker book (pictured above) for my male hottie, and I'll read White Teeth, by Zadie Smith for my female hottie.

Well, that's a relief. Now I can go back to reading instead of looking at author pics.

Well, I certainly messed up.... Assumed "hot authors" meant those who were selling a lot of books!
I read The Road but then I looked up Cormack McCarthy's picture and, meh.....
I did read Body Surfing this month and Anita Shreve looks pretty good so maybe that will count:

I'll need to look through my "to read" pile and see if I can find a guy that qualifies.

Haha sorry Terri! I should have been more specific. ;)
33TerriBooks
Not your fault, I didn't look at it very closely!

I just discovered this thread and a trip through the author pics of what I'm reading this month has been quite illuminating. I love the Peter Grant books but will definitely not be adding Ben Aaronovitch's pic here.
I am reading The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson and even found a pic of him with fangs but like this pic much better

I plan to read The Whispering Muse by Sjón from Iceland.

I read a children's graphic novel by this guy, Davide Cali.

This is the best of the women writers - I am forbidden by Anouk Markovits
