KEEPING 3 SEPERATE LIBRARIES

I JUST DISCOVERED LT and it is super. But I want to enter books into 3 different libraries (without intermingling the books in 1 large data base)

Does anyone know how to do this?

Help would be greatly appreciated

You can only do that by having three separate accounts.

You ~could~ tag each book as belonging to its relevant "logical" library -- Library1, Library 2...
or red, green, blue if you wish. Then, whey you want to look at a specific library, sort them by that tag.

ETA: Welcome to LibraryThing, kiggens. Feel free to stop by the Green Dragon for good conversation, ale and cheese. It's a friendly place.

As 2 said, the only way to currently do this is have three seperate accounts. It's okay to do, lots of people do it. There are plans in the works for a Collections feature that may do what you want, but it's something that's been "coming soon" for a long time, so don't hold your breath.

Or do, then awake from the coma you put yourself into a few months from now.

Why do you want to do it, btw?

The only problem with having three separate LT accounts is that the only way you can log into more that one LT account at one time is to open two (or more) different browsers. You cannot log into more than one LT account at a time on the same browser. (However, you can log out of one account then log into another account on the same browser.)

I've been trying to keep my wishlist on a separate LT account, but it's a hassle to either open IE each time I want to access it or log out of my main LT account so I can log into my wishlist account. So, my wishlist is on Goodreads. LT has actually made this easy because I can add books to Goodreads with one click using the "Buy, borrow, swap or view" feature on the book page. Every once in awhile I'll put books onto my LT wishlist account, mainly because I like to see the recommendations I get, but generally I've found it's a pain to maintain two LT accounts.

I hope that collections solves this problem, but I've quit holding my breath, hence the Goodreads account. (Sorry, Tim, but I had to do something besides wait. If collections are implemented on LT, the Goodreads account is gone, but until then I need an easy way to manage my wishlist.)

#5> Naughty! Stop teasing us with 'Collections' - I keep drooling on my keyboard with anticipation! I've already had to get the IT dept to furnish me with a new one when I dropped my coffee in it, I can't get one for drool damage... Could always implement the bunker idea until we get them ........

the Goodreads account is gone

Now you're talking! Will you send a dead-fish to Shelfari too?

>10 timspalding: Tim - Hey, you implement collections, and I'll quite gladly get rid of the Goodreads account and even send the dead fish to Shelfari. Any particular type of fish you're thinking of?

I want to concur, as vocally as I can, with the suggestion of enabling some facility to:

a) Flag owned books as currently being read.
b) Flag non-owned books as wanting to acquire.
c) Flag books as read.

The only reason I reluctantly recently began to use the noxious Visualbookshelf on Facebook is because I can do these things there. So for bonus points, allow these flags to appear in the Librarything Facebook application.

Cheers,

Brad.

While this is true, if you use Firefox and have the "IE Tab" add-on, you can be logged in to two LT accounts simultaneously in the same browser window; one of them is technically in IE, but it's just another tab in your FF window. (I have this extension because there are a few sites I need to use for work that don't work properly under FF.)

#13, I didn't know such a thing existed! Where'd'ya get it? There are some of my work sites that don't work in Firefox and I hate having to open the dreaded IE.....

Oh yes, lorax, please do tell! That would be wonderfully useful to have.

>13 lorax: lorax - I forgot about that. I installed the IE add-on for my corporate bank and 401k websites, but it doesn't work with either, so I forgot about its existence. In any case, though, I must say that it is extremely easy to add books to Goodreads via LT with the "Buy, borrow, swap or steal" button on the book page. It's ironic, isn't it, that it's easier to go back and forth between LT and a competitor than it is between two LT accounts. Now, if there were collections . . . and you could add a book that is already on LT to an LT account . . . . . Not that I mean to start a fuss or anything. ;)

For those who are interested in the IE tab add-on for Firefox, go here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Talbin, many thanks! That's a little work of genius for the few sites that don't perform well on Firefox.

That's an amazing program which I wish I had known about this morning when I was going back and forth between FF and IE!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I guess 3 accounts is the way to go.
Timspalding wanted to know why. If you can, take a look at what I have done so far, entered over 200 books and I am just starting with the A's. I don't want to deal with cookbooks cluttering up press books.

Do you know that you could tag your books with cookbook and pressbook and be able to see just one or the other by searching on that tag?

21kathrynnd

Well you can see just one or the other by searching for a tag across all three groups in a private group also. There could be other reasons for not wanting to intermingle books in one database.

I have three accounts, just upgraded the third to paid recently.

I know what my problem is. I am just starting to enter these books in LT and I want to do it systematically but LT makes me feel like a kid in a candy store, I want to do everything!

>8 Talbin: ... 13's suggestion is great to know about. For myself, if I have to log in to more than one account (e.g., my personal account and a legacy/type account), I simply open up firefox and safari) ...

There's another useful Firefox extension called CookieSwap. It gives you three 'profiles' - basically sets of cookies - and you can change between them with a click on the status bar. So log in to one account in one window/tab, change profiles and log into another in another window (and into a third if you want to), then as long as you remember to change profiles when you switch tabs/windows, you can work in two or three at a time.
