The Folio Book of Literary Puzzles by John Sutherland 2007

Plot holes and inconsistencies in a novel can be annoying to the reader and often an explanation is desired, but unfortunately, seldom forthcoming. In this small book John Sutherland tries to fill some of these holes or offer an explanation for the author’s errors.

A diverse range of novels and authors are covered from Dickens and James Joyce to Thomas Hardy and Leo Tolstoy. The discussions cover a varied number of problems in literature –
- How can the sun set in the East?
- How can heavy furniture move around a room?
- Was it a dream or reality?
- How did two things happen at the same time to the one person?
- Was it rape or seduction?
- For how long is Alice in Wonderland?

25 different scenarios are discussed in the xv + 192 page book. Some of the discussions are about trivial matters, while others are fascinating discussions of an author’s errors and style.

The compact book is 20x13.7cm. and was published without a slipcase or dust-jacket. It is bound in green paper with a colour cover illustration and plain mid-green endpapers. There is an introduction by the author and 17 integrated monochrome illustrations plus a colour frontispiece taken from other Folio Society editions.

Peter Suart's binding illustration is lovely. Seems rather unusual for the binding and internal illustrations to be done by different artists.

EDIT: Oh I get it each story is illustrated by a different artist.
