Preramble...
a) Rules will be posted in the first message of the thread.
b) Revisions to the rules will be generally agreed upon by whoever is actively playing the game at the time, and updated in this by whoever posted the first message (in this case, moi).
c) The person who posts the Challenge is heretoforafter known as the Challenger.
d) Everyone else is a Respondent.
e) "Weekend" begins 4 PM (LT-Time) on Friday afternoons (unless it's a holiday, in which case - Thursday afternoon), and ends 8 AM Monday morning (unless ~that~ is a holiday, so Tuesday, then).

Game Rules:
1) The Challenger must post as much of a set of contiguous lyrics as necessary to allow Respondents a reasonable chance of determining the name of the song. Finding them on a web site somewhere in order to ensure an accurate Challenge is okey dokey.
2) If the name of the song is in the lyrics , substitute (Song Title) in its place.
3) Any variation to what is required of the Respondent should be mentioned at this time.
4) It is considered Poor Sportsmanship for a Respondent to use the Internet Machine to search for the lyrics to a Challenge. A foxing of your most cherished books is still inadequate punishment to wish upon such ne'er-do-wells.
5) Unless otherwise specified, the Respondent is to answer with the title of the song, and the name of the original songwriter or band that recorded it. Other chit-chat is fine, but first things first, okay?
6) If only the Title, but not the Writer/Band is correct, the first Respondent with the correct Title "wins", under the discretion of the Challenger.
7) If there are no responses within 24 hours (48 on weekends), the Challenger may divulge the answer, and post another challenge.
8) If the Challenger has not acknowledged the first Respondent within 24 hours (48 on weekends, the MOST RECENT Respondent may declare the Challenge comatose and post a Challenge of his/her own.
9) If that person does not post a Challenge within 24 hours (48 on weekends), then the Respondent prior to the now-MIA Challenger may post a challenge.
10) NO ONE may start a second Challenge while one is outstanding, unless the thread has been dormant for an entire WEEK.
11) It is okay to say that you are not fond of a particular artist or genre of music. However IT IS A FLAGABLE OFFENSE to so much as imply that anyone who might enjoy said artist/genre is somehow lacking in worth or respect. If one wishes to do so in a joking manner, an appropriate emoticon should be included at the end of the statement.

New:
Rule 11 has been added on 10/31/10. Please familiarize yourself with it and follow it while in the Name That Tune thread. If you have any questions or comments on this new rule, please make them here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85921#2265588

Now on to the fun! I've been in Halloween mode, and the following was originally in the 60s and has had several covers, so hopefully someone can get it ;)

What big eyes you have
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad
So just to see that you don't get chased
I think I ought to walk with you for a ways
What full lips you have
They're sure to lure someone bad
So until you get to grandma's place
I think you ought to walk with me and be safe

There's that age difference, again! lol

In keeping with the H-ween theme:
Now he's dropped on to the floor,
Heading for the bedroom door.
Maybe he's as scared as me.
Where's he gone now, I can't see.

That's got to be The Monster Mash by Boris Karloff

11DeltaQueen50
Edited: Oct 26, 2010, 2:52 am

They did the Mash,
The Monster Mash
It was the graveyard smash!

It is the Monster Mash - the singer sounded like Boris Karloff - but was Bobby "Boris" Pickett.

Take it away Mr. House!

Whoops - I just googled the Monster Mash and Boris Karloff also did it. He sang it live on Shindig years ago!

Okay, but in trying to remain thematic, I'm afraid this one might be a bit obscure...

In between the verses, the chorus/title is sung 3 times

You took the toaster when you went
You never paid your half the rent
You took the spices from the rack
But you don't have to put 'em back
'Cause in your haste on Hallo-ween
You left your camera on the bed
Where we played roles in black and white
You left a roll of black and white
I set the timer, thought of you
Put the lens up to my head
I took a photograph for you
What comes out gray is really red

I smashed your pumpkin on the floor
The candle flickered at my feet
As goblins flew across the moon
The children peered into the room
A cowboy shivered on the porch
And Cinderella checked her watch
A hobo waited in the street
An angel whispered trick or treat
What was I supposed to do
But to sit there in the dark
I was amazed to think that you
Would take the candy with you too

I've sat all night, and now it's dawn
And I cannot believe my eyes
There's garbage strewn across the lawn
Where we once stared up at the sky
And streams of paper fill the tree
That hovered over you and me
And shaving cream covers the car
That we picked up in Baltimore
And though I know it's hard to tell
I hope that what's-his-name treats you well
I still maintain that he's a bum
But it's your money, have some fun

Well, it was a long shot, and fell short.
The tune was an at least partially autobiographic tune by Richard Shindell called Are You Happy Now?

There's a bit at the end that goes:
You always asked why I had not Written you a verse or two
Since that's the one thing I regret I dedicate this one to you
...and then he does the chorus again - Clearly, there are some unresolved issues...

Let's move on, shall we?

I can feel her heartbeat from a thousand miles
And the heavens open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that's where I belong
Yeah, I'm running to her like a river's song

"Crazy Love"
Van Morrison

I bet that was a good heartache song you posted before Mr. House. But it sounds kind of tongue-in-cheek. lol By the way, the woman in that song was a real witch, yes?

18WholeHouseLibrary
Oct 27, 2010, 2:33 pm

Yes, Crazy Love

19Boobalack
Edited: Oct 27, 2010, 2:45 pm

I'm pretty sure more artists have done that one, but Morrison is the one who popped into my mind.

I thought this one would be good for H'ween.

In the kitchen my stove was a blazin' hot.
The coffee was a boilin' in the pot.
The grease had melted in my pan.
I had a hunk of meat in my hand.

From outer space there sat a man
On a hot stove with the pots and pans.
"Say that's hot!" I began to shout.
He drank a hot coffee from the spout.

He ate the raw meat right from my hand.
Drank the hot grease from the fryin' pan.
He said to me "Well you better run,
And don't be here when the mornin' comes."

20Jim53

The song is called "Haunted House," but I'm not sure who sang it. I think it was one of the guys from Kiss.

21Boobalack

Picket lines
School boycotts
They try to say it's a communist plot
All I want is equality

You told me to wash and clean my ears
And talk real fine just like a lady
And you'd stop calling me Sister Sadie

23Jim53
Oct 29, 2010, 9:43 am

That was "Mississippi Goddam" by Nina Simone, a folk/blues/r&b/jazz/pop singer and pianist from the 1960s. Let's try another:

I'm old enough to sin but I'm too young to vote
Society's been dragging on the tail of my coat
But now I've got a suitcase full of fifty-pound notes
And a half-naked woman with her tongue down my throat

28girlfromshangrila
Oct 29, 2010, 4:36 pm

Is that a three-letter acronym to The Last Airbender? Does it have anything to do with the Theater of the Living Arts in Philly? Or is it proof of Too Little Audacity from the writer (AKA Yours Truly)? ;-)

29Jim53
Oct 30, 2010, 8:58 am

Acronym. I like self-descriptive terms like that. A TLA is a TLA.

I seem to have struck out again. That one was called "I Feel So Good." Rather than identify the artist, I'll give you a verse from one of his old bands. This is how he was described in the song that they used to introduce each member:

Possessor of the magic touch
But no magician he
Will play for you some magic notes
Instead as you will see

Bueller? Anyone?

Ah well. The singer in #23 was Richard Thompson, from early in his solo career, after he had left Fairport Convention, whose "Come All Ye" includes the verse in #29.

Trying again...

Regarding #59, I've got a Steve Goodman album with the song on it. He speaks at the beginning of the track, and calls it A Fool Such as I. I found the sheet music for it, and it's titled Now and Then. I'm happy either way. It was penned by Hank Snow.

Why does she waste all her time with me
There must be something there that I don't see

68girlfromshangrila

The title is "She Likes Me For Me", but I can't for the life of me remember who sings it. I'm sure it's a band (as opposed to a singer), and one that was very popular with another song (late 90s?, maybe?) but that's about as far as I can get.

Edit: Is it Collective Soul, by any chance?

69ThrillerFan
Edited: Nov 5, 2010, 10:07 am

The title is NOT "She Likes Me For Me" (hence why I said the title may be tricky), hence why it's in the lyrics, and no, it's not by Collective Soul.

This is one of those songs that everyone seems to mistake the title for the most commonly used phrase in the song, like Green Day's "Good Riddance" that everyone mistakes for thinking that it's "Time Of Your Life", which is wrong.

#66, I thought it was a dead giveaway because I never give out refrains.

I'll give people until late morning today EDT, and then expose the answer and post up different lyrics.

EDIT: katelisim, Since I've now given it away, I'm surprised that you haven't heard this song before...I thought you had the advantage over anyone else with this being from 1999 (title is in message 70 - here are the lyrics). You usually nail all the ones I put that are within the last 20 years.

She don't care about my car
She don't care about my money
And that's real good because I don't got alot to spend
But if I did it wouldn't mean nothing'

She likes me for me
Not because I look like Tyson Beckford
With the charm of Robert Redford
Oozing out my ears
But what she sees
Are my faults and indecisions
My insecure conditions
And the tears upon the pillow that I shed

She don't care about my big screen
Or my collection of DVD's
Things like that just never mattered much to her
Plus she don't watch too much tv

And she don't care that I can fly her
To places she ain't never been
But if she really wants to go
I think deep down she knows that
All she has to say is when

She likes me for me
Not because I hang with Leonardo
Or that guy who played in "Fargo"
I think his name is Steve
She's the one for me
And I just can't live without her
My arms belong around her
And I'm so glad I found her once again

And I'm so glad I found her once again
And I'm so glad I found her once again
Gazing at the ceiling
as we entertain our feelings in the dark
The things that we're afraid of are gonna show us
what we're made of in the end

She likes me for me
Not because I sing like Pavarotti
Or because I am such a hottie
I like her for her
Not because she's phat like Cindy Crawford
She has got so much to offer
Why does she waste all her time with me
There must be something there that I don't see

She likes me for me
Not becasue I'm tough like Dirty Hairy
Make her laugh just like Jim Carrey
Unlike the Cable Guy
But what she sees
Is that I can't live without her
My arms belong around her
And I'm so glad I found her once again
Found her once again
I'm so glad I found her once again
On again

I'm sure girlfromhangrilia had the right song in mind, however, the song is:

"Hey Leonardo" by Blessid Union of Souls

Here's lyrics for the next one:

We were made for each other
Out here forever
I know we were, yeah

And all I ever wanted was for you to know
Everything I'd do, I'd give my heart and soul
I can hardly breathe I need to feel you here with me, yeah

71girlfromshangrila
Nov 5, 2010, 11:03 am

> 70: What's hangrilia? LOL

Now this one *is* a dead giveaway: it's "When you're gone" by Avril Lavigne. That's just the kind of song that gets stuck in your brain just to torture you.

72ThrillerFan
Edited: Nov 5, 2010, 12:02 pm

#71 - You are the one with the handle, what is hangrilia? LOL

You are right with this one, it is "When You're Gone".

If songs have to get stuck in my brain, I'd rather it be one like "When You're Gone" and not one like, say, "Baby One More Time".

If I had to say who I truly thought was the best all around musician of the 2K decade, there would be no contest. It would be Avril! Combination of Punk, Rock, and Power Ballads, and she actually has skills, can write, sing, etc, not just dance and jump around the stage like a retarded chimpanzee!

I also noticed that she's on the cover of Maxim again, and that this is supposedly her third time on the cover. She's hot!

Anyway, you are up next girlfromshangrilia!

73girlfromshangrila

Anyway, these lyrics have been stuck in my head for the last couple of days, so maybe they should be here:

You never could get it
Unless you were fed it
Now you're here and you don't know why

That's Spin Spin Sugar by the Sneaker Pimps. Let's try another 90s song, maybe it'll be easier with redacted titles?

I know in my heart
I know in my mind
We weren't meant to be
-title- yo?
I'm the girl in your life
I'm the one you call wife
And I need to know
-title- yo?
Is there anyone else?
That can do it the best
Give you things you need
Well it must be me
I've got very good dreams
And the fantasies
But I need to know

About a little guy that lives in a -title- world
And all day and all night and everything he sees
Is just -title- like him inside and outside

And everything is -title- for him and his-self
And everybody around

Yeah, he did a great remix of this theme. Not that I think it needed a remix after Eiffel 65 did it, but what do I know. =)

I did dance a lot to his version when I was in my teens, though. Good times.

Here are my lyrics:
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

I cry away each lonely night.
The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie,
And she's my heart's delight.
The second one is prison, babe.
The sheriff's on my trail,
And if he catches up with me,
I'll spend my life in jail.

Got a wife in Chino, babe,
And one in Cherokee.
The first one says she's got my child,
But it don't look like me.

This is an easy one. I actually like one of the covers better than the original. Go figure. lol
But that's not strange for me.

See another kind of mind there.

Oh you slipped away from the harbour side

#121 was a tune by Al (Year of the Cat) Stewart called The Dark and the Rolling Sea.
I figured it out on the guitar yesterday.

Drat and double drat! I thought #123 was going to be easy.

For the record, it's Wheel's on Fire, written by Bob Dylan and Rich Danko (from The Band).

Try this one:

Well there's a young man in a T-shirt
listin' to a rockin' rollin' station.
He's got greasy hair and a greasy smile that says,
"Lord, this must be my destination"
'Cause they told me when I was younger, "Boy, you gonna be President"
But just like ev'rything else, those old crazy dreams
just kinda came and went

New Lyrics:

They have 2 more albums: Dangerous and Moving; Waste Management. Here's one off the newest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3bCJ-rqkMw

According to Wikipedia: It refers to a shortened version of the Russian "Та любит Ту (Ta lyubit Tu)", meaning "She loves her". For the release of their first English-language album, they decided to go by t.A.T.u., using upper case letters and periods to differentiate between an already existing Australian band also named "Tatu."

Back to Game. . . And just because I feel silly right now, you guys get these lyrics

You know that I love you boy.
Hot like Mexico, rejoice.
At this point I gotta choose,
nothing to loose.
Don't call my name.
Don't call my name, -title-.
I'm not your babe.
I'm not your babe, Fernando.

That one's easy, other than the spelling. I hope French is like Spanish, where the J makes the H sound:

Since I'm about 99.9% sure of the title, and since I'm not going to be able to log on again until the morning, I'm going to go ahead and put the next set of lyrics in. If kateilism says my answer is wrong, then ignore. Otherwise, while we are on the theme of stupid and silly lyrics:

Alright now fellas, (YEAH!)
Now what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!) I can't hear ya'
I say what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!) whooo...
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, Ok now ladies, (YEAH!)
I see we gon' break it down in just a few seconds
don't make me break it down for nothin'
Now I wanna see y'all on y'all baddest behavior
but i see Lend me some suga', I am your neighbor
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it (OHH OH)
Shake it, shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (OHH OH)
Shake it, shake it like a Polaroid Picture, shake it shake it
Shh you got to, shake it, shh shake it, shake it, got to shake it
(Shake it Suga') shake it like a Poloroid Picture
Now while Beyonce's and Lucy Lui's
And baby dolls, get on the floor
(Get on the floor)

You know what to dooo..

#241,

The "Gibb" brothers (I think they are "Barry" and "Maurice", if I recall correctly) are amongst those from "The Bee-Gees" (I think, hope I'm not confusing the name). I want to say the Gibb brothers were twins, but I'm not sure. Didn't listen to the Bee-Gees except when the station my parents were playing played them. The only song I can recall by them I think is called "How Deep Is Your Love", and I think one of the Gibb brothers (couldn't tell you which) did a duet with Barbara Streisand (GAG!) called "What Kind of Fool".

I also want to say that one of them is dead, and the other is still alive. Once again, don't quote me on it, and if that's accurate, I have absolutely no idea which one's dead and which one's not!

247Jim53
Dec 20, 2010, 4:52 pm

#246 Barry and Robin Gibb are still alive; Maurice died in the last couple of years, I think. Katie's "aliiiiiive" reminded me of the chorus of "Staying Alive," which like "How Deep Is Your Love" was from the movie Saturday Night Fever.

253Boobalack
Dec 21, 2010, 4:27 pm

It doesn't take nearly that much to get me drunk. Maybe because I don't drink that much. None at all, any more. Got too old.

When I was young and the world belonged to me,
I thought that love meant pain and jealousy.
It was a cross on my shoulder.
Oh Lord, now I feel so much older. (oooh, oooh)

Time had a way of making me see
My lonely life has taken it's toll on me.
Now I feel the emptiness,
And I don't want to live like this.

Dec 22, 2010, 4:47 pm

It's been 24 hours, so that one was "Till the End of Time" by Foreigner.

Next:

Days, times we will remember.
When innocence was lost,
We let our hearts move on.
So many dreams we thought would last forever --
Today it doesn't matter.
All those dreams are gone.
They are gone. (ooooh)
Tell me how it feels again.
Oh, show me that it's real, and then
I'll walk away, from my own reflection…

255Boobalack
Dec 23, 2010, 5:25 pm

That one was "Real World" by Foreigner.

I'll try it one more time.

You get a shiver in the dark.
It's been raining in the park,
But meantime south of the river,
You stop, and you hold everything.
A band is blowing Dixie double-four time.
You feel all right when you hear that music ring.

You step inside, but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down.
Too much competition, too many other places --
But not too many horns can make that sound.

The third time is supposed to be the charm, so whoever gets this, please go ahead and post your lyrics; however, if nobody gets it within 24 hours, then anyone who so desires may do the honors. Thanks.

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining star to you.
Deep peace of the son of peace to you.

One man stood firm guarding cups overflowing,
Brimful of memories and yesterday's dreams.
He could never explain his own silent thunder.
The ocean just blows rough at this time of year.

And the wheel keeps on turning,
The wheel keeps on turning,
The wheel keeps on turning,
Turning around.

Away we will sail with all our flags flying.
Too many changes can cause us delay.
Each star in the sky is there for a reason,.
Making it so bright for this time of day

And the wheel keeps on turning,
The wheel keeps on turning,
The wheel keeps on turning.
This fool made it round.

Just for the halibut, I posted the complete song.

"November Rain" by Guns N' Roses
The thought just occurred to me that it should be Guns 'N (not N') Roses. lol

He came from somewhere back in her long ago.
The sentimental fool don't see.
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life.
She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale,
Never coming near what he wanted to say --
Only to realize
It never really was.

It's been over 24 hours, but since this is a holiday weekend, I suppose we should leave this until Monday morning, as per the rules.
Happy New Year!

Wow Boo...I can hear that first line in my head...I can hear the guy singing it, I could sing it........I just can't place it....except to say if I remember correctly it as the late 70's or maybe early 80's. As I had two sons, born just 14 months apart in 1979 and 1980...the 80's are a bit blurry for me as I had no time for TV, radio, music or reading that didn't pertain to my children.

I know exactly what you mean! I had three children, each 20 months older than the previous one, so that was three all under four years old -- for a while, anyway. They did get older. lol

It may come to you when you least expect it!

Ah! It's the Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes!

I (also) have been wracking my brain over it since you posted it, Boo.

Mr. House!

I love Michael McDonald's voice.

Personally, his voice is the reason I stopped enjoying the DB; but that's just me.

This one ought to go pretty quick....

You can get anything you want at Name That Tune #5...

Arlo. I can't remember the exact title; was it "The Ballad of Alice's Restaurant"?

276Boobalack

I think it's just "Alice's Restaurant" but am not sure.

No ballad; just Alice's Restaurant.

Either of you may post next.

I like the idea of songs that can be recognized by a single line. This one should go quickly too...

Honky-Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones.

Moving right along...

I break the yolks and make a smiley face
I kinda like it in my brand new place,
Wipe the spots off of the mirror
Don't leave my keys in the door,
I Never put wet towels on the floor anymore

(Part of title) and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
can you help me unravel my latest mistake,
I don't love him, winter just wasn't my season
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to critisize,
hypocrites, you're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,

Something like 2AM? I can never remember the girl's name though, I've looked it up like 20 times. . . brain just doesn't want to accept that I like that song >:(

As mentioned, it's "Part" of the title.

The title is "________ (2 AM)" Where "2 AM" is what fills that "Part of title" blank.

Other part, the main part of the title, is still missing, as is the artist.

So anybody know based on the little bit of information determined thus far?

AHA! Finally got the tune going in my head, so I'm 80% sure the other part of the title is Breathe. Still got nothing on the artist, and I can guarantee I won't remember that.

Isn't it a girl with a sweet voice and sort of a breathing-through-the mouth style of singing?

I thought of Jordin Sparks first, but on second thought it might not be her. Maybe someone who rose to fame around the same time?

Edit: Colbie Caillat, maybe?

Since katelisim at least got the rest of the title, I'm going to give her the credit and say it's her turn to go next.

Without at least the "Breathe", I wouldn't have been able to give credit.

First verse talks about Abortion (the verse given). Second verse talks about Alcoholism. Song basically gives the message that life is short, we all make mistakes, and don't try to go back and reverse what can't be reversed.

It's "Breathe (2 am)" by Anna Nalick

katelisim, you're up next.

okie dokie. Here's a silly one

Whoa oh whoa oh
This is what I wanna do
Whoa oh whoa oh
Let's have some fun
Whoa oh whoa oh
One on one just me and you
Whoa oh whoa oh

ThrillerFan, your song was so very intense. Wow.

#289

Intense in what sense? Song meaning? Too hard to figure out?

It was a big hit a year or 2 ago. Albeit, Anna Nalick appears to be a "One Hit Wonder".

Sometimes I wonder if the guy she is talking about in the 2nd verse who wasn't sober since maybe October of last year, what time frame was she in?

If she sang it in January, unimpressive, he'd only be drunk for 3 months.

If she sang it in December, October of last year would be 14 months ago, and to not be sober for 14 straight months says something for sure!

And here I am, the loser that doesn't drink at all!

Jan 4, 2011, 5:57 pm

TF - being a non-drinker doesn't make one a loser.

Back to the game... (from #288)

I would like to say it's a tune done by Janis Joplin when she fronted The Holding Company, but I can't think of the name of the tune, and I suspect it wouldn't be right anyway.

Jan 4, 2011, 6:24 pm

WHL: I didn't know she was in any other bands. . . did a quick search and didn't find a song with those lyrics (though, Ball and Chain had a section with woah in it a few times).

This is much later than that. Here, have some more lyrics:

If you're alone and you need a friend
Someone to make you forget your problems
Just come along baby
Take my hand
I'll be your lover tonight

295katelisim
Jan 5, 2011, 5:07 pm

Well, it's been over 24hrs from the first part of the lyrics. That is Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom by Vengaboys. How about this one:

Would you dance if I asked you to dance?
Would you run and never look back?
Would you cry if you saw me crying?
Would you save my soul tonight?
Would you tremble if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh? Oh please tell me these.
Now would you die for the one you love?
Hold me in your arms tonight?

ok, this one I know, EXCEPT how to spell the artist's game.

It's "Hero" by Enrique Eglacious (I'm wagering that spelling is way off)

It's Iglesias, TF. And for some reason, his voice irks me. Always has.
