What and who are " French writers"?

Oh! This is a topic close to my heart! As a French citizen, I had a hard time admitting that French literature could extend beyond the confines of France, but living in Canada, I couldn't ignore French Canadian writing. When I finally took the plunge, I discovered a wealth of authors who contribute so much in themes, vocabulary, culture... les incontournables : Gabrielle Roy for her wonderfully classic language and descriptions of the Manitoba Prairies; Michel Tremblay for his hard core Montreal joual accent; not to mention the formidable Nancy Huston who writes equally in French and English of her native Prairies.
The French are snobs when it comes to their language and they are missing out on treasures!

Thanks for this post cecilturtle, I completely adore French Canadian Literature. I totally agree with the three authors you mention and I would like to add Marie Gagnier and Jacques Poulin.

Certainly Jacques Poulin and Nancy Huston are good choices, as a graduate student in French Lit I can assure you there are others I adore as well: Louis Hamelin, par exemple.
