Who is your favorite Utah author? What IS a Utah author? I think it's pretty hard to beat Wallace Stegner, and I think his Utah credentials are pretty clear. But Ron Carlson is my sleeper. I highly recommend his story "The H Street sledding record," published in News of the World. It is a wonderful Christmas story set in Salt Lake City. I'd love to hear about other Utah favorites.

My second favorite Utah author is Levi S. Peterson. His autobiography A Rascal by Nature, A Christian by Yearning : A Mormon Autobiography was recently published by the U. of Utah Press. And Signature Books has a 20th anniversary edtion of The Backslider forthcoming in December.
I have a report on this, titiled "Return of The Backslider" to be published in the Oct. 19 issue of Salt Lake City Weekly.
Levi was so helpful in getting The WORD from Weber County : A Centennial Anthology of our Best Writers published that I am eternally in his debt.
But Ron Carlson rocks my world. Not only is he a master of the short story, he is a great teacher. I had a personal consultation with him years ago at Writers at Work. It was the first time I ever felt that somebody undersood what I was writing about.
It was a short meeting. We both agreed that there are far too many writers' conferences to attend, and not enough time to write.

Levi is great. He was my advisor for my English degree at Weber. Love Carlson's short stories. "The H Street Sledding Record" is a great Christmas story. (Duh! I already said that.)

I've been reading "Great & Peculiar Beauty" an anthology edited by Thomas Lyon and Terry Williams. Also reading "Word from Weber." Are there other Utah anthologies that people know of?

Sorry to jump into a dialog so long after everyone else has posted. I did enjoy "The H Street sledding record" but, think the Utah author list is incomplete without L.E. Modesitt, jr. His fantasy and science fiction production is outstanding both in character development and sheer volume of output. I believe he is currently living in the Cedar City area. I admire his "Ghost" series and the way he uses music to consolidate energy in his "Recluse" series. A very creative, inventive author. His books are readily available in the Murray and Salt Lake County Library systems. I highly recommend a visit to one of his worlds!
