I am looking all over for novels set in pre-colonial Australia, and for that matter new Zealand. I do a site called medieval-novels.com that covers the periods 400 to 1600 AD anywhere in the world. You are welcome to visit as we are readying for a relaunch on 1/1/11.

Thanks for any leads on Australian and Pacific Island fiction set between 400 and 1600 AD .

Authors, add your books .. any location, just must be from the era.

Well Ten Canoes is a movie, so it doesn't count. I cannot think of any books set in Australia. NZ is a possibility I suppose, as the Maori arrived some centuries before the pakeha and there may be a novel I haven't heard of. One of the stories threaded through Cloud Atlas concerns the relations between the Maori and the original inhabitants the Maoriori, but the date is not specified and it's not a whole novel.

I wish you the best of British!

Does pre-colonial mean pre-1788 (ie date of settlement of Botany Bay) or pre-European contact on both east and west coast? If the latter, then I don't know any though there are plenty of collections of legends in literary format (nearly all of which reflect European folktale models) eg Catherine Langloh Parker's Australian Legendary Tales (1896) and More Australian Legendary Tales (1898) -many times republished.
