I've got loads to read this is going to be fun!
I want to make this a challenge by only listing the new books that I read this year and not re-reads. I have decided to use this challenge for the kids books I read from work and some of them will count as halfsies

January Reads.
0.5 Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More To Life by Maurice Sendak, (Classic Sendak, just love this guy!).
1. This Totally Bites by Ruth Ames ( a great, spooky read for girls).
2. North Star to Freedom: The Story of the Underground Railroad by Gena K. Gorrell (a good resource for this subject).
2.5 Hey World, Here I Am! by Jean Little ( a wonderful verse novel)

Condensed Version (from Hey World, Here I Am!)
When I went over to the Blair's,
Emily was reading her cousin Ann a condensed version
of Heidi.
It was all wrong - the pictures, the words,
what happened, the way it felt.
"You shouldn't read her that," I said.
"Why not?" asked Emily.
Suddenly, I knew exactly how to explain.
"People who read condensed versions instead of
the real book," I said loftily,
"Are like people who read a road map
-and think they've been on a journey."
Emily looked at me, for a moment.
Then she put down the book and clapped.

3. The Truth About Poop by Susan E. Goodman (well presented, captivating, good and funny illustrations which will have any ten-year-old giggling and going back for more).
3.5 The Promise by Jackie French Koller.
4. Cheddar by Susan E. Merrit.
4.5 Catwings by Ursula k. Le Guin (best story I have ever read about flying cats!).
5. Dr. Jekyll, Orthodontist by Dan Greenburg (funny).
5.5 Project Disaster by Sylvia McNicholl (nice story).
6. The Classroom at the End of the Hall by Douglas Evans ( a wonderful read! very Dahlesque).
6.5 Poison Island by H.I.Larry.
7. Robinhound Crusoe by Caroline Leavitt.
7.5 The Kids Book of Black Canadian History by Rosemary Sadlier
8 Moonlight on the Magic Flute by Mary Pope Osborne.
8.5 The Giant Diamond Robbery by Geronimo Stilton.

Karene, How was the North Star to Freedom?

16kpolhuis

North Star to Freedom was very well written. It started out explaining what slavery is and it origins then went on to outline the American Civil war and concluded with information about modern forms of slavery today. I would recommend it as a good first read about this subject.

Working in a school library has it's perquisites... I get to read all the new stuff when it comes in. This month my focus will be on Black History with some Valentines Day, and Chinese New Year Projects. We have gotten in some new exciting resources for Black History Month and I look forward to reading them to the kids!
