At the beginning of each year I try to start something new - new project, new regime, new book....I decided this year to start a few new series.

I'm planning to read The Secret of the Pink Carnation and The Mournful Teddy. What are you planning? I'm always looking for new series.

I am planning on reading Jar City, which I have owned for a couple of years now, but not read.

I'm starting a Joe Abercrombie series, The First Law The Blade Itself. I haven't read any of his books before.

I picked up a copy of The Quick and the Thread by Amanda Lee at the Goodwill Bookstore near my Dad's earlier this week. It's the first in the series so I plan to read it!

I'll be reading Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death.

About halfway through Jar City so far. I'm enjoying it.

I've got quite a few other mystery series debuts, cozy and noncozy alike, lined up for this month.

I've just started Case Histories, the first Jackson Brodie book by Kate Atkinson. So far, it's really good but it feels like something bad is about to happen so I need to get off here and back to it...

I'm about halfway through The Secret of the Pink Carnation. It's a bit different in style, but I like it.

I think I'm going to try Roman Blood by Steven Saylor, first in a mystery series set in ancient Rome, which was recommended to me last year on LT when I said I enjoyed Lindsey Davis' Falco series.

11majkia
Jan 1, 2011, 11:02 pm

#10 Oh! I enjoyed the Lindsey Davis Falco books as well. I'll be interested in what you think of Roman Blood.

I chose Still Life by Louise Penny for this challenge. I read it while riding in the car coming home from the in-laws in Florida. I did enjoy it and will look for the second in the series. "Cosy" mysteries are not my usual type of reading, so I'm glad to discover something new!

I'll be starting Regeneration by Pat Barker today. I'm hoping I like it because I saw the two other books of the trilogy at my favourite used book store but of course will only buy them if I'm into the first one.

>8 cushlareads: I've read Case Histories and really loved it. Have Atkinson's two most recent books which I look forward to getting around to.

>2 alcottacre: & 7 Would love to get my hands on Jar City, but then again I've got more than enough various series going for now!

I unintentionally did this TIOLI. I read Carved in Bone by Jefferson Bass. I have had it on my wishlist for a long time and it is a free Nookbook so I jumped on the chance! It is a good mystery. Plenty of twists and turns.

Jan 2, 2011, 6:52 pm

So many series, so little time. I hope to read something for this challenge but at the moment I'm a bit spoilt for choice as to what.... maybe I'll try joining in with Regeneration.

16gennyt
Jan 2, 2011, 7:33 pm

#13 I read the Regeneration trilogy shortly after it appeared - loved it, hope you like it too.

#8 Glad you are enjoying Case Studies. I've really enjoyed that whole series, just have the latest to read.

#11 I'll report back on Roman Blood when I've read it. First I have to finish some overdue library books, none of which fit this challenge.

I am new to this TIOLI gig, so I am trying out a couple of the challenges for January. I will be starting The Hunger Games this evening.

#17 Good luck with the challenge - have fun! Have you entered your choices into the wiki page? (I didn't realise I had to do that when I first started).

thanks for the heads up about the free nook book. I just downloaded so if I can fit it in, I'll read it this month too!

To Smiler69 message 13 - I loved the Pat Barker series. I hope you enjoy it.

I am going to read the first book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians Series, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Thank you, avatiakh for adding it to the list for me. Several of my 7th grade students have been asking me to read these.

21Smiler69
Edited: Jan 3, 2011, 12:47 am

>20 Katethegreyt: Kate, I'm only a few chapters in so far, but I loved Regeneration from the very beginning! I knew the story would appeal to me because the topic of a mental health hospital to help soldiers during WWI was very intriguing. The only thing I wasn't sure about was whether I'd be comfortable with Pat Barker's writing style, which I've found is entirely approachable and poses no challenges at all. So I'll be reserving the following two books tomorrow, well before getting to the end of this one. Well, I'm off to continue with it!

I am going to read Forty Words For Sorrow by Giles Blunt, the first in a Canadian crime fiction series.

23cbl_tn
Jan 3, 2011, 7:05 pm

I finished Mistress of the Art of Death last night. I liked it, but didn't love it. I've recently read a couple of Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries, and Peters does a better job of transporting me into 12th century England.

Jan 3, 2011, 8:13 pm

I read the first in Rick Riordan's new series, Kane: The Red Pyramid, based on Egyptian mythology (rather than Greek as in Percy Jackson). It was a lot of fun! I posted my review on the work page as well as my thread.

This challenge is great! One of my goals this year is to work on reading books where I have managed to acquire multiple books from a series but haven't managed to finish the first entry yet.

I read the first volume of the Courtney Crumrin comics on New Years day... and then proceeded to read the rest.

I plan to spend the rest of the month working on Outlander and Out From Boneville, the first collected volume of Jeff Smith's Bone comics.

26Katethegreyt
Jan 3, 2011, 11:12 pm

#25 - You'll love the Bone series! The story and the illustrations are great.

Jan 3, 2011, 11:14 pm

Thanks, Tabatha, I'm glad that so many are enjoying the challenge.

I love books in a series and along with reading a few firsts for me, I'm also hearing about other series to check out - win/win for me!

I'm starting a new series, The A.D. Chronicles by Bodie and Brock Thoene. The first book in the series, which I'm reading now, is called First Light.

30brenpike
Jan 4, 2011, 2:52 pm

I'll take the challenge - I'm starting The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy this month. If there is time (!?), I'd also like to start Regeneration by Pat Barker.

31cyderry
Jan 5, 2011, 3:46 pm

I finished The Secret of the Pink Carnation. The style was a bit different from what I have previously read but I liked the story and the resolution.

32Smiler69
Jan 5, 2011, 4:04 pm

#30: I just finished Regeneration and absolutely loved it. I can't wait to get my hands on the other two now. Also read All the Pretty Horses a while back and again, look forward to the sequels.

Jan 5, 2011, 4:18 pm

I'm going to start There Came Both Mist and Snow

Cheli : I liked The Secret of the Pink Carnation .. up until last one I read, which was The Temptation of the Night Jasmine and I thought that was flagged compared to the others

34norabelle414
Jan 5, 2011, 4:18 pm

I finished The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and really enjoyed it. Light and entertaining, but not vapid. Does anyone have any thoughts on the quality of the sequels?

35DeltaQueen50
Jan 7, 2011, 12:35 pm

I just marked "Completed" beside Forty Words For Sorrow by Giles Blunt. A very good start to a series I intend to continue with.

36majkia
Jan 8, 2011, 1:36 pm

Yay! Finally got to mark one finished. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. I definitely will read the rest of the series!

37kiwiflowa
Jan 8, 2011, 2:56 pm

same! Finally finished Doomsday Book it was a fantastic read and will definitely read the rest of the Time Travelling Oxford Historians series, but at over 600 pages each not all at once!

Now I'm going to start The Secret History of the Pink Carnation as it's due back on the 17th and I hate being under time pressure.

38Smiler69
Jan 8, 2011, 6:20 pm

#34: I've read the two next titles in the series so far Tears of the Giraffe and Morality for Beautiful Girls and have the next one, The Kalahari Typing School for Men waiting on my shelf. I thought they were consistently good. If you liked the first one, I'd say you'll probably enjoy the others as well.

I just posted my take on Regeneration, the first of the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker which completely blew me away (in a very good way of course!). Here's the link to my review if you're interested. I can't wait to dive into the other two books. This year for sure.

I read The Secret History of the Pink Carnation and actually finished it a couple of days ago. Honestly I didn't know what to expect but I found myself not being able to put it down somehow. It was certainly a good vacation book and it had been on my shelf for years so it all worked out.

I've completed my read of The Quick and the Thread by Amanda Lee. It's nice first installment, but the author could do a little more to create a cozier atmosphere in the town and shop.

43ForeignCircus
Jan 11, 2011, 4:37 pm

I read The Naked Gardener which is supposed to be the start of a series. It was surprisingly good; the plot could have been hackneyed but the writing and the characters elevated it to a 4 star read.

This month I am going to read Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. It is the first in that series.

I am new to this group and site, I am unsure about where to post my progress or how to make a page with the trackers on them. Any tips would be appreciated, Thanks so much.

I really want to start the Morganville Vampire series and Hollows. I've been thinking about reading them for a while but just haven't, hopefully they'll be worth the wait!

I'm planning on jumping into this one with Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin.

I am enjoying my read for this challenge, One Helluva Mess (also published as Total Chaos) by Jean-Claude Izzo - a noir thriller set on the (really) mean streets of Marseilles.

You might also want to star it (upper right corner across from the thread name). You can star any thread that you want to be able to find again. At the top the thread page on the left is a table of links you can use -Your starred will give you a list of those threads that you put a star on.

As for the tickers, go to www.tickerfactory.com and just follow the instructions there. (The Savings tickers are the easiest to use but be sure to remember your password) Once you've made your ticker, copy the HTML code and then just paste it in your thread.

Use your thread to tell us all about the books you're reading and anything else you want to share. Also don't forget to visit http://www.librarything.com/groups/welcometolibrarythin which will tell you all about Librarything and how it works.

I finished Jar City, which is new series for me. Very enthralling, but also very bleak. Rated it as 3.8 stars, but 3.5 stars by library thing. It was a good read - but parts of it took a strong stomach -even for me! I'll be reading more in this series - recommended!
