This is what I've read in 2011. My goal for reading this year is just to read a lot more, and spend much less time on the internet! 50 books this year would be a good (though improbable!) goal to achieve~

Just finished Michael Crichton's Timeline. I found it was a very exciting read, as expected from Crichton. I really liked the way he researched a lot of ideas from the scientific world, and wove them into a version of time travel. Of course it requires a suspension of belief, as well as ignoring certain aspects and simple questions about time travel in the plot. But perhaps that's just me over thinking things. I just let these minor things slip by, for full enjoyment of what I was reading.
Crichton brings a lot of drama and excitement to this book, and sets up the story very well. Sometimes I felt there were a lot (almost too many!) of really close encounters that the characters always seemed to get out of. They all had a max stat of 18 for luck I guess. But hey, if the characters died right away we would have no story. Anyways, it was a fun read!

Finally, after a long summer, and getting stuck on an Umberto Echo book that I had to abandon, I finished Iain M. Banks' Consider Phlebas. I really loved this book! It is sci-fi at it's finest, with details and descriptions of things using real physics definitions and understanding. The way he described things made them seem more realistic (like lasers burning their victims, and the shots being invisible instead of colored "bolts" of light).
I liked the ending - nobody really "wins," and the different sections of the book during Horza's quest. The scene with Fwi-Song (the hugely obese guy that eats people with different pairs of steel teeth) was particularly vile - the description of him was one of the best paragraphs I have a ever read.
Anyways, I'll definitely read another Culture novel soon~~
