I seem to remember a character saying that the books in the Hogwarts library talk with each other. I don't remember the character or movie or book source. Can anyone help? Thanks.

In HPSS Harry goes to the restricted section at night and the books seem to be whispering to each other. Given the magic in Hogwarts, why not?

If I were a magic book, I would talk to the other books.

Applause to polly for the awesome HP recollection skills!

And now in light of jp's comment - I have to spin this thread into tangent world as I'm totally imagining conversations between my (sadly nonmagical) books.

Maybe it's just me, but certain titles seem like they would be quite gossipy. Like maybe The Alchemist's Daughter could tell The Thirteenth Tale about The Secret Life of Bees.

Elba - I do that when I'm shelving books at the library. One of the other librarians will do it as well and we'll compete to see who can get the longest sentence or story. The "bodice-rippers" make for scandal.

I think my library would drive me crazy if it could talk. I wouldn't be able to concentrate on my reading, or sleep at night.

#5 - Glad I'm not the only one! And I can only imagine what would result if the romance and horror sections were close by...

Despite being a librarian, most of our books at home are randomly shelved on account of moves and space needs. I always enjoy finding funny phrases or sentences spelled out by spine titles. If only the books were collaborating and reshelving themselves in an attempt to send me secret messages!

This thread made me immediately think of this quote: "My recurring fantasy about libraries is that at night, after everyone goes home, , the books come to life and mingle in a fabulous cocktail party. Finally, the poor biographies, languishing in exile during the day, get to join their compatriots." Neal Wyatt. The Readers Advisory Guide to Nonfiction. ALA 2007, p. 6

Wouldn't that be cool. Kind of (but not really) like an animated movie that I saw as a kid but can't remember the name of... pagemaster??
