I'm starting this a wee bit early because I'm looking for something a little different....

I'm looking for books on understanding poetry.

I tutor at a GED program & many of the students have trouble understanding "regular" poetry. I can relate to music, especially rap, but getting them to understand "mainstream" poetry & the images & rhythms is difficult... especially since I usually teach math & sometimes history.... NOT English, literature or grammar!

So, if you have any books (or websites) for poetry understanding, PLEASE let me know here or by PM!! I'll mooch anything!!

Also, if you have ANY GED materials, I'd love to have them!! Our reading materials disappear on a regular basis, mostly because it is the first module they work on & they take it home to study & never come back. (I want people to read & learn, so I have trouble with worrying about that)

Thanks in advance for ANY help or suggestions you have for me.

and now to return to our regular (non-academic) booksearching activities

Oh my. I'd love to know what a book on understanding poetry actually includes... Even I often don't "get" the rhythms, meanings, etc.
Good luck!

If anyone has copies of the Animorphs volumes 31 and 32 it would be greatly appreciated by my sons. My youngest is reading them for the first time and my oldest is re-reading the series and they are both crusing through the series.

Funny... I just added a book called poemcrazy: freeing your life with words by Susan G. Wooldridge. This book might not quite be the right fit for you, but I thought I would mention it anyways. She talks about how she relates poetry to different things and her processes, etc. It is more for people who like to write poetry, but if you read it you might be able to interpret some of what she says into helping people understand it.

Hello,

I'm looking for a copy of Halloween by Curtis Richards preferably not a movie tie in book. I'm hoping to find one for a friend for her birthday. It doesn't have to be giftble condition just not falling apart. She appreciated a good used book.

Anybody have a spare copy of Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay? My copy has gone missing and I'm bereft.

I'm looking for any veterinary technician reference books, textbooks, things like that. Anything on animal anatomy, veterinary pharmacology, zoological diseases, parasitology, etc. I recently got hired at a vet as a kennel worker and am starting to train as a tech assistant, so I have a lot of learning to catch up on.

Does any one have any fairly recent SAT prep books they want to get rid of to a good home with two good students who (gasp) need to prep for the SAT? By fairly recent, I think within the last 3 years or so.

>10 ealaindraoi:

Um, I have an SAT prep book, but it is most definitely not copyrighted this millennium. It was one my mom got for me to study from when I started high school because she apparently never met me (I never studied for anything). I never even opened it until just now to see the copyright date. 1994.

So, no, not recent AT ALL. But if you want it anyway it's yours.

#11"I never even opened it until just now to see the copyright date. 1994." Totally laughing at this!

I have no idea if older SAT prep books would be any help. One of my daughters is going to ask some of her teachers how recent SAT prep books should be. So I'll get back to you if they think older ones can be useful. They've both taken the SAT earlier this year (9 & 10th grade) and they're both really close to the national merit scholarship cutoff, except they need some help in the math portion. Has the math part changed in the last decade +? I dunno!

#12 There may be a very slight change/increase in theory based problems, or ones that don't require a calculator.

I would focus on understanding formulas, logic, and multi-step word problems. In areas where they haven't had instruction (multi-variable calculus) I would work on generalities, such as which answer makes the best sense.

IIRC, the SAT goes to precalculus, possibly first semester calculus, but those aren't a major portion of the test, so a test strategy would work best with those problems if they haven't had pre- & 1st sem calculus.

Then have them practice any SAT-style tests you can get your hands on, or any tests to work on. If they come across problems that they don't understand, they can ask for help.

Check the local college to see if they have a math study room or peer help area and ask if they would allow them to come & ask for some help.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

#10 ealaindaroi - I bought daughter the SAT prep book last year when she was a junior and she never even cracked it. :(

However, she did well enough on her SATs to get college scholarships and is accepted at a nice small university 1 1/2 hours away from us.

I'll see if she still has it; if so, I'll be glad to mooch it to you.

>12 ealaindraoi: Much to my mother's chagrin!

My sister is a high school freshman now but she hasn't done any SAT prepwork yet, so I don't know how it has changed only that I'm pretty sure it has. I remember when I took it I scored consistently on the math section each year freshman through senior year. All the calculus apparently didn't help my score haha. My verbal went up all the way though (due to all the Latin I was taking, I imagine).

1. Beyond Monet by Barrie Bennett
2. Tribes a new way of learning and being together by Jeanne Gibbs

I will be happy to take any of the Tribes books possiable.

skittles, back in the dark ages when I was in high school we used a pretty good text called How Does a Poem Mean? by John Ciardi, who was a poet and teacher. I no longer have my copy, but you might want to see if there's one available.

I'm looking for travel books for Florence, Rome and Venice. Basically, anywhere in Italy, but especially Florence, since I'll be there for several weeks. Preferably as recent as possible - I don't want to go older than ten years or so.

Anyone have anything available?

I'm looking for travel books as well; anything on the Canadian Maritimes, especially New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, for a short trip in May. Also anything on the Cape Cod, Nantuket, Boston area, for a fall bicycling trip.

Many thanks!

For Nova Scotia- check out their website to see if they have a nice booklet with lots of information- I got one of those when I went to Halifax and Lunenberg a number of years ago.

I'm looking for the 4th Obernewtyn book, The keeping place, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd books in the Mortal Engines/Hungry City Chronicles: Mortal Engines, Predator's Gold, and Infernal Devices- if anyone would like to give those away that would be grand!

Long shot, but here goes:

I am looking for a February 2011 issue of the Australian teenage girls' magazine Dolly - a relative of mine was featured in it.

Extra points on offer for an airmail send to the UK!

If anyone can find (hopefully paperback, but I'll take any copy!) I'd love them forever!

The Singer of All Songs

The Waterless Sea

The Tenth Power

I really would love these books, I've read them so many times, and I haven't been able to find them anywhere, and I don't want to deprive the library of them so many times! :)
