Anyone have a rec for where I can read a comprehensive history of the history of Hawaii, particularly the American annexation? I don't live there, but I'm quite interested in understanding how the U.S. arrived there. Thanks!

Of course, all versions of Hawaii's history have a bias.

Shoal of Time is a good place to start. You may also enjoy reading the book written by Hawaii's (last) Queen Liliuokalani: Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen

Also, check out this site: http://www.hawaiihistory.org/

Although these aren't history books exactly, Exploring Historic Wailuku
by George Engebretson is part of a series of "Exploring Historic " by different authors which you might find interesting. Exploring Historic Upcountry by Jill Engledow is another title I'm aware of. There could be more.

Edited to add: Found a few more -

Exploring Historic Hilo (Small Town Series) by Leslie Lang
Exploring Historic Lahaina (Small Town Series Maui) by Summer Kupau

Recently published books...Lost Kingdom by Julia Siler...
Dismembering Lahui by Osorio-very good
Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell...she is not a historian per se but has a humorist take on history...

Mahalo for the recommendations, dramler. To make it easier for others to check them out, I'll re-list them using touchstones (so that LT will provide links to the books):

Lost Kingdom by Julia Siler
Dismembering Lahui by Osorio
Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell

Based on reviews, I'd like to read all of them!
