thank you, need new suggestions for my next lot of reading!! found the millenium trilogy very interesting, although the second book was a little slow to get going. Fashion Babylon was just a freebie with a magazine, ok but easily read within 24hours, nothing to get your teeth into. Found Life of Pi, very interesting and the last few chapters had me wondering if the novel was in fact reality not fiction.

If you liked the Millenium trilogy, take a look at The Informationist. It's got a strong female lead with a lot of similarity with Salander. Writing's pretty good too.

April

9. The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult.
A family full of secrets and lies. Daniel is escaping from his past as the only white kid in an eskimo village, Trixie is a 14 yr old growing up too fast and Laura is a college professor who had an affair with a student. I enjoyed the different view points of father, mother and daughter, and the addition of the comic strip illustrations was an interesting touch, but thought that the ending was rather quick and more explanation to how the crime was committed was needed. The thread of Dante's inferno and how this linked to the story gave the novel a different dimension. Still trying to solve the puzzle tho!! ***

May

10. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte retold by Anna Claybourne
Mode;rn retelling of a classic story, quite a short story retold for the younger reader, missed reading this story at school so thought I would try this one for starters in the hope of reading the full version one day. ***

May

11. kestrel for a knave by Barry Hines
Another one I missed at school, seen the film a few times, well we had to, living in the 'northern' town the book is based in and the author coming from the local area it was kind of compulsory! just started....

Hi kerryth,

So glad you found the "75-er's challenge". I hope you find it fun. It certainly is an active group.

I loved, loved, loved Charlotte's Web as a kid and enjoyed it even more when I had a chance to read it over once again to my (now grown) kids when they were little.

I'm also a nurse, but a (more than a little) older than your "over the hill" age of 40. ;-)

16kerryth
Edited: May 2, 2011, 1:40 pm

... well completed Kestrel for a Knave, very descriptive and glad to say the film Kes is very true to the book, but it does leave you wondering what becomes of Billy Casper. Just glad that I know the dialect or it could have been rather difficult to read in places. but loved it ****

Hi SqueakyChu

thanks for the welcome, this 75-er's challenge is becoming addictive!! love reading all the others thread and you do seem a friendly group too. might even try one of your TIOLI challenges soon too!!

Charlotte's Web is next on the list, loved it before so revisiting it again will be fun, my two eldest have also read the book, just trying to encourage my youngest to follow suit.

Glad to see a fellow nurse on here, I came late to the profession but loving it and wished that I had done it years ago! not quite 4-0 yet, got to endure that milestone birthday later in the year. he he :-)

Just completed another TIOLI May challenge #9 It won't fit. mine was a children's book Stories of Winnie-the-Pooh measured 28.5cms, read some of it aloud to my youngest, then finished the rest off to myself, was a nice pleasant read and he's loving that I'm reading more to him.

Oo another nice surprise today, a new book swap arrived in the post today - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, so another one to add to my TBR pile!! he he

I've heard some great stuff about The Book Thief and so I bought that book a couple of months ago, but it is sitting on my TBR pile as well. :) Given the subject matter, I was a bit surprised to see it in the YA section of my bookstore, but will have to read it to make a final call on that one.

I read through the prologue of The Book Thief and it looks like its going to be an interesting read.. but must add it to the TBR pile and finish the one I'm already reading! he he

oo another book swap book arrived The Da Vinci Code and I borrow a book from my friend, A Thousand Splendid Suns, so the TBR continues to grow!!

13. The Secret Life of Bees - completed
really enjoyed reading this book.

Lily's struggle with her mother's tragic accidental death when she was a child, and how she copes with her abusive father on a peach farm in South Carolina was page turning for me. I enjoyed how she relates to Rosaleen her black housekeeper and the journey she undergoes with her trying to find a connection to her mother's past. The description, plot and characters were very beliveable. How race issues tensions and inequalities of the early 1960's and female sprituality are dealt with very well too.

Another book swapped book arrived in the post today! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. just thought I would read a couple of pages and haven't put it down since! opps, loving the different narratives and how it is all told through letters.

#35: I loved Guernsey!

May 13, 2011, 10:04 am

I just stumbled upon your thread, we seem to have a lot of books in common. Welcome!

I loved Guernsey also and The Secret Life of Bees, though I read it a long time ago. I do quite a bit of reading aloud with my kids, as well.

38kerryth
May 15, 2011, 4:21 pm

>36 alcottacre: & 37. thank you both. I loved Guernsey too! just finished the book too, can't believe I have completed it so soon!! but I think it will be another I will re-read again, I enjoyed the afterword by Annie Barrows about how readers of the book become members of the Society through their shared views and love of reading - a lot like here on LT, sharing veiws etc with other book lovers from all across the world and thier interests in different books that you might not have considered before.

>37 AnneDC: thanks for stumbling across my thread, what type of books do your children like to be read aloud, my youngest is more interested in factual books at the moment, so 'Charlotte's Web' is taking longer to read that at first expected!

39kerryth
May 16, 2011, 4:06 pm

onto my next book, another bookswap!! The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, fast reading so far, very different from anything I've read before.

The Guernsey and Potato Peel Pie Society however, I adored! I really must reread that one...

had a peek at your profile and I too enjoy having a stroll round Waterstones too! at the moment tho I seem to be doing most of my book shopping or should I say swapping via readitswap, just got another to send off today in exchange for The Missing Person's Guide to Love so will have to add that to my every increasing TBR pile!!

Hi, i've been thinking and i've decided to start a new thread that makes more sense at my attempt to read 75 books in 2011, plus I also wanted to change my topic title and this was the only way I could think of changing it!

it can be found here http://www.librarything.com/topic/116444

thank you to all who stopped by this one, hopefully i might see again on the new one. x
