A Different Light Bookstore San Francisco is closing. Their sister store in LA closed a few weeks or months ago. Here's more on the San Francisco closing.

This SUCKS. I went to the Castro last year during a trip, and ADL was the first place on my "to see" list. This is so sad. There are still good LGBT bookstores to be found, as well as LGBT-friendly stores with good selections, but this was the flagship bookstore for out & proud gay books.

Who's left?

Giovanni's Room in Philadelphia
Lavender Inkwell in Syracuse
Proud Bookstore in Rehobeth Beach
Unabridged in Chicago
Outwrite in Atlanta
Bent Pages on Staten Island
Calamus in Boston
Glad Day in Toronto

They do seem to be closing fast these days, not just the LGBT ones but all book stores, here in Europe too.
There is still Gay's the Word in London, Löwenherz in Vienna and (with a rather small but always exquisite selection) the Schwules Museum in Berlin. Wonderful places all of them!
But where else? Well, I sadly admit that I for one repeatedly has to make the choice of either ordering online or going without...

Obelisk Bookstore in San Diego's Hillcrest area* is still open. I haven't been there in a while and I hear it's changed a bit under new management but it's still an LGBT focused business.

We are relatively lucky in Australia, with
The Bookshop Darlinghurst 207 Oxford Street Darlinghurst Taylor Sq in Sydney
and
Hares and Hyenas 63 Johnstone Street Fitzroy in Melbourne,
small shops by USA standards but then the market is smaller also, thy are able to order in for you and both have an online presence.
The only way to keep these and other independent booksellers viable is to support them by making purchases from them.
