House of Leaves

Ahhh... House of Leaves

So, curious as to who else has fallen in love with this.... unique work. Only book to ever give me nightmares and was required to read parts of it with a mirror. The author, Mark Z. Danielewski, is brother to the music artist POE and her album "Haunted" was built around the novel.

Any thoughts?

I thought the story was intriguing and there was no need to dress it up with silly graphic tricks; it was powerful enough without the gimmick!

I really enjoyed the the Navidson horror story, a wonderful idea and well implemented, really atmospheric and unsettling. The rest of it drove me nuts; Johnny's chracter was irritating and his descent into madness annoying to read. So as a story it didn't work for me, but it was interesting, thought provoking and fun. I didn't know there was music assoicated with it though I am going to have to check it out.

The artist is POE (female, fantastic voice) and the album name is "Haunted". Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_(Poe_album)

>2 reconditereader: Ditto! and doubly so as a bookstore employee! Check out Tree of Codes for the nadir of this stupiity.

I love this book. When I first got hold of it, I really wasn't sure I was going to get on with it, but by the end I was a hardcore fan. I just found it really compelling. And I did like Johnny Truant as a character. I didn't think the graphic strangeness was really a gimmick either, I thought it was an interesting way to supplement the theme of disorientation.

House of Leaves is probably the most frightening book I've ever read. Brilliant, but I'm not sure I enjoyed it. I respect it.

Loved it! I regret not forking out for the hardback edition. The paperback is good, but lacks some of the colour coding and so on.

I've had this book for I don't know how many years and it's still in my TBR section. I'm so ashamed!!

I've never understood what all the fuss is about. It was interesting enough, but the end was a total anti-climax, and it was such a royal PITA to read. I had no idea when I read it that it was going to become such a thing in the future.

One of my favorite books, easily. The story about the House alone is compelling enough, but mix all the other stuff in and it just gets greater and greater. I wish Danielewski would expand on the story, but I don't think he wants to. I really enjoyed it, especially looking back as to how I mainly read it on my commute and people kept thinking I was mad for turning the book upside down or reading it backwards occasionally.. good times.
