If anyone wants to give it a go, I noticed after a new member's question that the Author HelpThing page is out of date. It tells you things are in different places from where they really are - for example, it lists 'series' as being on the main section (it's in the sidebar now) and favorites as being on the sidebar (it's on the main page under 'members').

It could also benefit, in my opinion, from some screenshots that exhibit different parts of the page.

I'll try to do some work on it soon, maybe this afternoon, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else wants to do some digging in.

Some notes and questions as I work on this:

- Under 'includes the names', I'm not sure what clicking on each included name is showing me. Can someone explain it?

- 'Also includes' - anyone know what this is/how it's different from 'includes the names'?

- What on earth does the 'organize' link on the 'Works by X' bar do?

- Can someone give a better description of separating authors? Also of note, the Author Split page has no text whatsoever and I don't know enough about it to do it.

- What exactly does recalculate author do?

Under 'includes the names', I'm not sure what clicking on each included name is showing me.

It will show you which books are listed under each name or form of name. For instance: http://www.librarything.com/author/louisamayalcott&norefer=2

What on earth does the 'organize' link on the 'Works by X' bar do?

It takes you down to the place on the page where the "Improve this author" box is. From there, you can do a variety of tasks. (I agree that this is not at all clear.)

Wow, yeah. I saw that 'organize' behavior and actually wondered if it was a /bug/.

It will show you which books are listed under each name or form of name.

Can you elaborate on this? I don't combine much, so the nuances of 'form of name' are not clear to me. What does it mean in layman's terms?

Okay, an author page might include the full name ("Louisa May Alcott"), some combination of name and initials ("Louisa M. Alcott", "L.M. Alcott") or a variety of misspellings ("Louisa May Alcot", "Louis M. Alcott"), etc.

And clicking on each included name shows you what specific book (not work) someone has attributed to that form of the name?

I clicked around on several but they were all blank, which may be why I had a hard time figuring out what I was seeing.

No, work, I think, rather than book.

A version of an author's name will "win out" for the work depending on how many people have it attached to their copies/books.

It's possible that other people have simply changed their author entry to correct it, or that more people have subsequently added the book using a different version of the name, which is why no copies are attached to that particular version of the name.

I'm not sure, but I think it's possible that after a while, they all migrate to the main name on the author page -- that's just a guess though.

I think that sometimes combining will take books off a subordinate author page, so they won't show up on it.

It works just the same as the tag pages. You can click on a greyed out name to see who's tagged their books ficcion, even though on the main fiction page, ficcion is combined in.

On author pages, this can be really useful for distinguishing authors, or figuring out when author combinations are incorrect.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at with my last point in 8. I don't think this happens right after combination, but after they've been combined for some time, I think the works may migrate over somehow. But again, that's just a guess, based on behavior I've seen on some pages.

Okay, so if it's work rather than book, that explains why most of them would typically be empty.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a simple way to list a favorite author on my profile page? The instructions on how to do this appear to be out of date.

What instructions are you looking at? Could you provide a link, so that someone can update them if they are out of date?

1) Search for the author.
2) Go to the author's page (click on the author's name to get there).
3) Scroll down on the page until you get to the "Members" section in the middle of the page.
4) Click on the "add to favorites" button.
