Eilen Jewell and her band (the guitarist, Jerry Miller, sounds more than a little like Joe Maphis) are magnificent - a boozy, mysterious and beautiful sound:

Somebody says Joe Maphis (I love Joe Maphis!) and I have to check it out!
This is some really good singing, songwriting and instrument-playing. I definitely need to check Ms. Jewell and her band out further. Thanks, Ben!

Re 2: Ha! I saw them open for The Gun Club - I think they were a JL Pierce concoction. Have you ever listened to The Beasts of Bourbon?

Re 3: You really should, if you have the opportunity. The band puts on a great show and the guitarist is a force of nature (as was our local slinger for The Space Cossacks, now an Econ prof in the heartland, Ivan Pongracic).
