Madeline wants us to earn points by sharing a read so what better way then to have a challenge designed especially for you to read a book with someone else. I have list of 50 books that I think I want to read the rest of the year and so I've chosen 12 to push to the top and probably these will be what I read unless someone else has a book that's on my list and then I'll push something out of the way and read it with them. So here's what's on my list - what's on yours?
Here's the Main Thread is you need to get back. http://www.librarything.com/topic/121262

Oh, this is fun! I love the first step of just figuring out what books I'm likely to read next.

Linda - we're on, I've ordered Seige of Washington from the library.
Do you want to add this to the wiki, or do you want me to?
And you got me again, sign us up for Beaglemania, I bought it for my Nook.

Great, Cheli! Glad we found another common TBR book.
12cyderry
cbl ---> I added A Great Deliverance to the wiki - I've been promising myself this one since January!
13cbl_tn
Great! It's been on my list since January, too, but I've been meaning to get to it for quite a while. I just kept putting it off in favor of books for one of my challenges.
14thornton37814
I've added a few others to my list (message #6). A couple are NetGalley ARCs.
15lahochstetler
cbl- I'm also planning on reading Case Histories this month, so we could join up on that one.
I'm another who wants to read the last Miss Zukas, but there's no way I'll get it from the library before the end of the month- there's something like 35 requests in for it already.

16thornton37814
I want to read the Miss Zukas too. Our library doesn't have it, and I'm doubtful that they will get it. (They only have one in the entire series.) I'll probably have to either purchase it in print or Kindle format. I suspect it will be awhile before it shows up at the used bookstore. I can probably be persuaded by Linda to buy a copy, but I'll have to decide which format!
17cbl_tn
>15 lahochstetler: Great! I'll add it to the wiki. I had my name on the waiting list for the ebook download but I don't think my turn will come up until September. There are print copies available at several branches so I'll go ahead and check out a print copy.
19lahochstetler
>17 cbl_tn:- Great - thank you!
20lindapanzo
#16 Lori, you should get Miss Zukas. I've added us in. I bought the pb version. I don't think there was a Kindle version when I was looking.
#6 Cheli, I will put us down for the beagle mystery.
#7 Lori, again, I'd like to read the Cleo Coyle book. I've read the first two and the one you mention is the third, I think. I'd also like to get to the Miranda James book, too.

Anyone planning on reading The Memory of Love this month? That book is a must-read for me in August.
22Citizenjoyce
Does anyone want to be my friend and read the second Dublin Murder Squad mystery The Likeness by Tana French?
23alcottacre
#22: Joyce, if I can get a copy from the local library - I have put it on hold already - I will join you.
24Citizenjoyce
Yahoo!! I hear it's the best of the three, but I had no trouble getting it from my library. I'm going to make you my friend right now, and in hopeful anticipation I'll put it on the wiki. Oh, wait, I guess I should wait on the wiki. Got my fingers crossed though.
25avatiakh
#21: Stasia - I'll join you on The Memory of Love.
I'm reading The Periodic Table by Primo Levi with Dejah_Thoris who started the TIOLI Challenge: Read a book with an element of the Periodic Table in the title which led to us sharing this read.
I want to read a couple that I can't fit to other challenges:
Lunch with the Generals by Derek Hansen (374pgs)
On Elegance while Sleeping by Viscount Lascano Tegui (172pgs)
Doctor Glas by Hjalmar Soderberg (143pgs)

#24: I will let you know if there is any problem with getting the book, but I do not expect any :)
#25: Cool beans, Kerry! I checked the other titles you mentioned, but my local library does not have a single one of them or I would join you. Sorry.

#26: Great, I've wanted to read Forna's book for a few months now - the others are fairly obscure books but I've seen good reviews for them.
28alcottacre
#27: I have seen nothing but good reviews of Forna's book so I am really looking forward to reading it.
29avatiakh
Yes, I heard her speak at our local writers festival back in May and was captivated by her story, both about the book and about her own family story.
30alcottacre
#29: That is cool! Should give you some additional insights into the book, I would think.
31cushlareads
#25 Kerry, I'm going to try to join in your read of The Periodic Table. I was wondering about it for the main periodic table challenge when you posted your question.
32souloftherose
I'll join in with The Memory of Love
33alcottacre
#32: Great!
34majkia
I'm going to read The Black Prism which doesn't fit anywhere else. Anyone want to join me?
35alcottacre
#34: I cannot help with that one, Jean. My local library does not have the book. Sorry.
36thornton37814
LINDA - Do you want me to move the Cleo Coyle book (Latte Trouble) over here and do a group read? I can delete it from the syllable challenge if we want to share it here.
37Donna828
>4 lindapanzo:: Hey, Friend, I'll be reading Big Spring Autumn with you. I put in the ILL request yesterday. I'll let you do the wiki-work!

#8 - Suz, I have The Dogs of Rome on my Kindle (I think thanks to your heads-up about it being free for download a few months back....). Let me know if you want to try for it in August.
42lahochstetler
I responded in the main thread, but officially wanted to say welcome katiekrug! I've heard so many good things about this book I need to see what all the fuss is about.
43lindapanzo
#36 Lori, I will join you at the other challenge. I don't I have many there, maybe one.
#37 Donna, I'll add the book to the wiki.

46Chatterbox
I'd share a read of that, Kerry; it's on my 11 in 11 challenge list...
49Chatterbox
hurrah! one challenge solved, twice over!

Peggy and I are going to be reading at least one Lord Peter Wimsey book together this month, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, if anyone would like to join us.
52gennyt
Anyone want to share a read of August Folly by Angela Thirkell, for a timely title?
Other books I'd like to read soon are:
Can you forgive her by Trollope - the first in his 'Pallisers' series of novels which focus on the world of politics unlike the church-focussed Barchester novels .
Gilead - had hoped to read during Orange July but ran out of time.
Any takers?

#51: Glad to have you with us, Genny!
#52: I am interested in reading the Thirkell book, but unfortunately my local library does not have it. I just read Gilead recently so do not want to read that one again and I still need to finish the Barchesters before I get to the Pallisers.

I wasn't going to even think of adding another book to my August list, but would anyone be interested in reading The Edge of Ruin? It's a first mystery set in NYC during the early days of the movie industry.
Let me know!

I have a couple of books that I'm reading this month that don't fit anywhere else:
A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again - David Foster Wallace
The Outliers - Malcolm Gladwell
Slammerkin - Emma Donoghue
If anyone's interested in any of these let me know!

I did look through this thread but couldn't see any mention of this so far but EBT1002 and humouress are reading Emma by Jane Austen - I hope they don't mind me adding my name to the wiki as well.
Also is anyone still taking part in the group read of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. My hold has come in at the library and I will be picking up a copy soon. Please let me know if you are interested.
I've also got The Remedy by Michelle Lovric and The Inheritance and other stories by Robin Hobb/Megan Lindholm from the library. Any one else interested in reading either of those books?

63thornton37814
I just finished the first of four books for which I signed up in this category, Fatal Remedies by Donna Leon.
64Citizenjoyce
Shoot, wisechild, I plan to read Slammerkin next month. It's a big one, isn't it?
65humouress
As calm said, EBT1002 and I will be reading Jane Austen's "Emma". You beat me to it! And you're welcome to join.
ETA : ooh - thanks for listing me on the wiki; better get reading, then.

As usual, I've signed up for about double the number of TIOLI books as I can realistically expect to read. However, the six books I've signed up for for this challenge will be on my "must read" list. I would not want to let my friends down.
I've started The Siege of Washington already, Cheli, and will absolutely positively read Miss Zukas (probably this weekend) and Big Spring Autumn (probably next week).
The three remaining ones, two mysteries (one with Cheli and one with Ivy) and a baseball book (with Cheli), will be high on my list of reading priorities this month though probably in the second half of August.

Definitely join us on Case Histories- it'll be fun! I'll be cracking mine open when I fly to the east coast on Saturday. Hours and hours of uninterrupted reading time!
68cyderry
I started Fatal remedies (my read with Lori) this morning and have The siege of Washington: the untold story of the twelve days that shook the Union at the library ready for pickup for my read with Linda. I need to finish one book from last month that fortunately fit into another TIOLI.
I love seeing all those stars on the wiki - everybody making friends!

>64 Citizenjoyce: - It's not huge, but I guess that depends on your definition of 'big one.' My paperback copy is 410 pages, but I don't expect it to be super dense. No pressure though! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it when you get to it. I loved Room, as did many people on LT, but I expect it to be quite different.
70souloftherose
I'm another person who didn't manage to finish Emma last month so I've joined in with the shared read for this challenge.
71Citizenjoyce
Wisechild, I was thinking about Shantaram which has 1152 pages, but I will be reading Slammerkin next month which is fortunately about 1/3 that big so I'll have time for other things.
72Citizenjoyce
Is anyone interested in joining me in a read of the delightful little book Unlikely Friendships by Jennifer S. Holland about unlikely friendships between different species of animals? I'm feeling in the need of a little uplifting reading and viewing right now, though I must say, I'm finding My Antonia beautifully uplifting. How is it that I don't remember reading Willa Cather before?
73Dejah_Thoris
>72 Citizenjoyce:
Uplifting and delightful sounds good to me, so I'll join you in reading Unlikely Friendships. It's checked out from my library at the moment, but I should be able to get it by the end of the month. Nice idea -- thanks.

Thanks, Dejah, it's 200 pages but many photoes and should be a quick read.

Is there anyone interested in reading The Help by Kathyrn Stockett? I wanted to read it before I saw the movie.
77Dejah_Thoris
>76 jacqueline065:
I am interested in reading it, but I don't know how long it will be before I get it from the library. It fits under Challenge #1 -- w adjectives -- for wise, wondrous and wonderful, I think.

I thought I had a friend read with Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie but I have to use it for the food challenge. Here are my next few reads...
Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb
Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix
Fat Girl by Judith Moore
Dragon's Blood by Jane Yolen
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
I just finished State of Wonder, Garden Spells (which was AWESOME), and Key of Valor.

I've finished 4 of the 6 "friend" books I planned to read this month.
Still slogging through The Last Boy, the baseball book about Mickey Mantle. Cheli, are you having any more luck with this one? For me, slogging and baseball book don't ordinarily appear in the same sentence.
I haven't started Beaglemania yet but I doubt that it'll pose a problem. I'll probably start it this weekend.

I'm already being much too ambitious this month, but I have a couple of other books that I may end up reading -- I'm much more likely to do so if someone wants to read them with me.
Is anyone interested in:
Much Ado About Nothing - William Shakespeare
Retribution Falls - Chris Wooding
The Falling Machine: The Society of Steam Book 1 - Andrew P. Mayer
If anyone joins me on one (or more) of these, I promise to get it read.
Thanks!

I'd love to read Retribution Falls though I'd have to bump quite a few other TIOLI reads.

It looks as though my move is going to happen in September -- and my new library system does not have Retribution Falls. I think I'm going to have to read it this month, even if it means putting off some other books.
Let me know if you want to try it!

Excellent! I'll add us to the wiki.

Even though I am already overcommitted this month I am very tempted by Retribution Falls. I'll see if I can get it out of the library...

Still looking for a friend to read The Help with. I am going to get to it the lask week in August.

Anyone want to jump in and read So Many Books, So Little Time with me?

#97 Sorry I can't help with The Help - read it a few months ago - but I hope you find someone who is interested. And even if you don't, I hope you read it anyway!

#99 That's okay! I will read by the end of the month. Good thing is that it can fit in to Challenge #1 "W Adjectives". I finally broke down and bought this month and I wanted to read it before I saw the movie.

I finished Case Histories and thought it was fantastic- so many twists and turns!

I have finally started both The Likeness and The Memory of Love.

Well, there's a contrast in women for you.

#104: LOL! Yes, there is!

Madeline wants us to earn points by sharing a read so what better way then to have a challenge designed especially for you to read a book with someone else. (@ post 1)
Wow, cyderry! What a great idea you had. I just posted my book completed on the wiki and see that this challenge has 35 points on it!

I've just finished listening to Case Histories so can I add it to the wiki and make some new friends in the process?

I just started Case Histories last night and am hooked!

I've finished all six of the "friends read together" books I'd planned for August.
Cheli, thanks for coming up with such a great challenge!!

Ok, I'm not doing so well with these shared reads and while I'm reading two of them at the moment (The Periodic Table and Retribution Falls) I don't think I'll finish them by the end of the month.
I have completed two shared reads - Pereira Maintains and Case Histories. And as far as The Memory of Love goes, I've removed my entry from the wiki, I haven't had time to pick the book up yet.

I finished The Likeness a few minutes ago. Thank you, Joyce, for the suggestion of reading this book, which I have had for over a year now. Wow! It was a terrific read for me.

For all those who are trying to complete the shared reads that they have on the wiki (myself included), check to see if your friend has finished theirs, if not I would contact my friend to see if they think they can make the Wednesday night deadline. Otherwise, you might want to see if the book fits another challenge or move another book higher in your priorities. I don't want anyone to feel pressured to finish. The whole idea of the challenge was to read with your friend.

>112 alcottacre: I'm glad you liked it, Stasia. Now I have to find time to fit the third one in. Tana French does make some compelling characters.

#115: I have to fit the third one in some time too. I am just not sure when!

I have my copy of The Memory of Love sitting here as I type up my notes. What a strong book this is; for me, it'll be a daunting one to review. But content aside, if that cover had been entered in the contest a while back, it could have won the Beautiful Cover vote!
