OK, it's hot out there (unless you're one of the few lucky folks hanging out in the southern hemisphere), which means it's a good time to curl up in a cool corner with a glass of iced tea, lemonade or chilled white wine and just read.

So I've decided to host another readathon this weekend -- from 4 p.m. this Saturday, August 6, (teatime!) until 4 p.m. Sunday August 7 (teatime!) So, starting sorting through your TBR mountains or TIOLI "must reads", and post below if you intend to join in the fun.

See you here then!

Chatterbox -- Suzanne, reading in Brooklyn, NY
Katelisim -- Katie, reading in Minnesota
Kidzdoc -- Darryl, reading in Atlanta
Calm -- reading in Wales
PersephonesLibrary -- Kathy, reading in Austria
Liezkl -- reading in South Africa
Elkiedee -- Luci, reading in London
Arubabookwoman -- Deborah, reading in Washington State.
Majkia -- Jean, reading in Florida

I think I should be able to stop in for a few hours, hopefully. That's my goal anyway. I've got a few books that I really need to get through this month. And these read-a-thons are quite good motivation.

I'm working this weekend, but I should be in for Saturday from 4 pm until 10-11 pm, and for maybe a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon.

>2 katelisim: Oh, that's right; this is the ReadaThing weekend. Off to check...that one lasts for 48 hours starting on 8 pm Friday Eastern Time (US). That doesn't work well for me, so I'll stick with this Read-a-Thon instead.

There's no reason why you couldn't post your results to both, if you wanted to participate? I don't really follow many other groups, so didn't spot this, Morphy. I'd prefer to stick with 24 hours, too, to give me a chance to get some other stuff done, but let me know if you'd rather move this to another weekend. Right now we've got three participants, which is a decent start.

I really enjoy the 75er Readathons so I'm in:)

I've already signed up for the LT Readathing - no timeline as I really need to get moving on some of my overambitious TIOLI list.

Calm in Wales.

I'll be reading for readathing and the green dragon so might as well read for this one too! Now, if only I could get out of the party on Sunday to read more... However, 21 year old granddaughter might never forgive me. Hmm. Worth it, or not???

Hello everybody! I would be interested, but it depends on the time. Maybe that's a stupid question, but is your time zone EST?

12Chatterbox
Aug 5, 2011, 11:59 am

Jean, depends on whether your granddaughter is a book addict?? :-)

Hi Kathy! It is EST, indeed -- sorry for not being more clear up front. But feel free to drop in and out at your pleasure -- that's what most people tend to do. We've had people join in from difft time zones, from Europe to New Zealand, and although they tend to be reading when some of us are snoozing, it does work out!

Excellent! With 30 mins or so to go before "kick off", some questions to ponder as you get going.

What are your objectives for this readathon -- or do you just want an excuse to curl up with a book/many books and read?

When there isn't a readathon going on, do you read as voraciously?

Since this is the summer "doldrums" readathon, do you find your reading changes much in the summer, or when the weather outdoors is oppressive, whether it's hot or cold? Are you now looking forward, mentally at least, to fall?

I'll be back with some more questions later on...

And here's a template to update as you report back on your reading:

HOUR:

What did you read this hour? (Titles):

What books have you read from in this readathon so far?

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us?

How many pages did you read this hour?
What's the total # of pages for this readathon?

Did you finish any books this hour?

How many books have you finished during the readathon?

The menu:

Any distractions?

If you've run across a great quotation in your reading, why not share it with the rest of us here?

Happy reading, everyone! I'll be back at 4 p.m. EDT to see how everyone is faring...

I'm just getting ready to start reading again. I've already done a fair bit today as part of Readathing but for me this is when I'm going to try to really get settled down with the books:)

What are your objectives for this readathon -- or do you just want an excuse to curl up with a book/many books and read? No particular goals this time, though I would like to get the focus to finally finish A Distant Mirror (just over 100 pages to go so that should be possible); at least read up to the right chapter of The Wind-up Bird Chronicles so that I can check out the first spoiler thread and see where else my reading will take me - I've got too many books started:)

When there isn't a readathon going on, do you read as voraciously?
Not really since I tend to read more when I'm in bed than during the day when I just tend to dip in and out reading a few pages here and there - not sure why:)

Since this is the summer "doldrums" readathon, do you find your reading changes much in the summer, or when the weather outdoors is oppressive, whether it's hot or cold? Are you now looking forward, mentally at least, to fall? I think my reading is more or less steady throughout the year.

Time to pick up a book and start reading:)

Good evening and good night from Austria! Although I’ll join in around 11 hours, I wanted to wish you all a nice readathon: Lots of page-turning and even more fun!

Tomorrow, my goal is to start and hopefully finish Die Mittagsfrau by Julia Franck.

When I am not participating at a readathon, I have not as much "stamina" and I take more breaks to think about what I've just read.

And no, I am not at all looking forward to fall - I am still waiting that the summer finally starts! The whole July was rainy and today was the first sunny day! :)

See (read) you later!

HOUR: 1

What did you read this hour? (Titles): A Distant Mirror; King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and The Sky Mystery, Magic and Myth

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? As above

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us? Not yet:)

How many pages did you read this hour? 44
What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 44

The menu: some cider

Any distractions? heavy rain.

If you've run across a great quotation in your reading, why not share it with the rest of us here? from the introduction to King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table:-

... the great legends, like the best of fairy tales, must be retold from age to age: there is always something new to be found in them, and each retelling brings them freshly and more vividly before a new generation — and therein lies their immortality.

Checking in!

HOUR ONE (5 p.m. EDT)

What did you read this hour? (Titles): Two for Sorrow by Nicola Upson

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? Just this one, though I'll probably finish it in the next hour.

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us? This is good -- the third in a series featuring real life crime writer Josephine Tey as a detective. It's fascinating and v. well written.

How many pages did you read this hour? 102 pages
What's the total # of pages for this readathon? ditto

Did you finish any books this hour? Nope

How many books have you finished during the readathon? None yet!

The menu: Sandwiches -- lovely smoky Westphalian ham on white bread with butter.

Any distractions? The cat, trying to get to the Westphalian ham before I did...

My readathon objectives: I've got some TBR stacks that I have to bring under control; I'm also waaay behind in my reading for Amazon Vine and the dozens (literally) of library books that I've had out, some for months.

I probably read just as voraciously when there's no readathon, although I may be less disciplined about certain books. I need an extra push to get through some non-fiction books that I've started.

Which brings me to my other question -- I've found this summer that my reading patterns have tipped quite far in the direction of fiction and letting the non-fiction stuff pile up to a greater extent. Not sure whether my concentration span is flagging, or I'm just not in the mood for anything serious, but some of these I want/need to read. So...

23rebeccanyc
Aug 6, 2011, 5:23 pm

OK, here I am! I'll be dropping in and out but am happy to join you all.

What are your objectives for this readathon -- or do you just want an excuse to curl up with a book/many books and read? I am just looking forward to having some time to read for more than a subway ride or 20 minutes here and there.

When there isn't a readathon going on, do you read as voraciously? Yes, subject to the demands of Real Life.

Since this is the summer "doldrums" readathon, do you find your reading changes much in the summer, or when the weather outdoors is oppressive, whether it's hot or cold? Are you now looking forward, mentally at least, to fall? A very interesting question! Usually, I have more time to read in the summer, and am also more relaxed, so I usually mentally schedule some tomes, both fiction and nonfiction, and other books that require concentration, for the summer. This year, while I have more reading time as usual, I am less relaxed (due to various things going on in aforementioned Real Life), and I've found myself in a little bit of a reading slump and only seem able to read extremely absorbing and relatively short fiction. So I think my major planned read, Citizens by Simon Schama, is probably a lost cause for this summer. I'm not completely looking forward to fall because I'm still hoping to get some summer vacation!

HOUR: Almost 5:30 and reading to start (hour 0)

Aug 6, 2011, 5:53 pm

I'm reading The Black Prism by Brent Weeks which I am enjoying very much.

On the Menu: currently cooking on the Barbie: Spare ribs and potatoes. And I think I might indulge in a Corona with it.

I never really have any goals for readathons. I just read whatever I've started and try not to waste so much time daydreaming about the story. I've been known to slow down deliberately on books I really love in order to stretch them out and let my imagination free to think what I'd do differently.

Summers here in Florida I treat like I did winters up north. Stay in and avoid the bad weather. So if anything, summers are better for reading than when the weather is pleasant and I can get out of the house without melting.

I'm reading on my kobo touch and for some reason this particular book lists pages by chapter, without indicating total pages read. It's very odd. So I've no real idea how many pages I've read.

Aug 6, 2011, 6:07 pm

Welcome, Rebecca!

Jean, that's kind of disconcerting... With my Kindle, even when it doesn't have page numbers, I have a sense of how far along I am, just as I do when I look at a "real" book and see that my bookmark is in it about halfway through the total pages. It shouldn't make a difference, but it does. Maybe it's the equivalent of knowing how deep the water is beneath you, even though you can swim very well??

HOUR TWO (6 p.m. EDT)

What did you read this hour? (Titles): Two for Sorrow by Nicola Upson

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? Just this one, just 30 pages or so to go until it's finished.

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us? This is a nice, complex mystery.

How many pages did you read this hour? 99 pages
What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 201 pages

Did you finish any books this hour? Nope

How many books have you finished during the readathon? None yet!

The menu: GUS Dry Valencia orange soda -- yummy.

How many pages did you read this hour? 46
What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 46

I'm here! Been reading The Black Prism but it is unclear how many pages I've read. This book is very weird in how it is on my Kobo Touch. It only shows number of pages in a chapter, rather than total pages in book. so I'll guess I've read about 100 pages so far this afternoon.

Sorry to be briefly AWOL! I spent about half an hour hunting (in vain) for my Nook (think the poltergeist removed it) and then went out to replenish the supplies of drinkables.

HOUR FOUR (8 p.m. EDT)

What did you read this hour? (Titles): Two for Sorrow by Nicola Upson and George, Nicholas and Wilhelm by Miranda Carter

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? These two.

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us? The mystery had a great twist to it; the biography is good, but dense.

How many pages did you read this hour? 39 pages in the first; 22 pages in the latter: 61 pages
What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 262 pages

Did you finish any books this hour? yup, Two for Sorrow.

How many books have you finished during the readathon? 1

The menu: diet Pepsi

Any distractions? Errands, missing Nook, untidy office...

I'll probably check in every other hour from now on -- at 10, midnight and possibly 2 a.m. After that, it will depend on when I wake up in the morning! Now off to update my own thread and check e-mail...

33elkiedee
Aug 6, 2011, 9:59 pm

What are your objectives for this readathon -- or do you just want an excuse to curl up with a book/many books and read?

My objective is just to enjoy some reading.

When there isn't a readathon going on, do you read as voraciously?

Yes

Since this is the summer "doldrums" readathon, do you find your reading changes much in the summer, or when the weather outdoors is oppressive, whether it's hot or cold? Are you now looking forward, mentally at least, to fall?

Not really, and no. I don't like the weather too hot but I find the days getting too short and it being dark early a drawback to autumn.

I'll be back with some more questions later on...

And here's a template to update as you report back on your reading:

HOUR: 5.5

What did you read this hour? What books have you read from in this readathon so far?

Jake Wallis Simons, The English German Girl
Roger Moorhouse, Berlin at War 1939-45
Catherine O'Flynn, What Was Lost
Patricia Wastvedt, The German Boy

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us?

They're all quite good so far. The Simons is another Kindertransport/WWII story.

How many pages did you read this hour? What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 35 - I started quite late because I was trying to sort out some books I'd found in the shed, including an uncatalogued box of non-fiction. I still haven't found one book I'm sure I bought 2 months ago though. Unfortunately, I've also found some damaged books including a box of crime fiction where some of the box has gone funny at the bottom and some books have started to look horrible, the majority are fine but even so....

I also found a few books in the charity shop including a Donna Leon I don't seem to have already.

Did you finish any books this hour? How many books have you finished during the readathon? No and none

The menu: Nothing yet but maybe some crisps

Any distractions? See above

What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 292 pages

Did you finish any books this hour? Nope...

How many books have you finished during the readathon? 1

The menu: some kind of pseudo dinner -- cheese, rolls, coleslaw.

Any distractions? Household chore kinda stuff.

Amusing description of Kaiser Wilhelm's mustache:
"it was the very model of a modern moustache, a controlled riposte to the great bushy, biblical patriarch beards and side-whiskers of the previous generation." Apparently, his moustache commanded audiences of its own -- people turned out to see it "live" during his 1893 visit to England...

Just saw the daughter, son-in-law and grandson off after a dinner of fried catfish, corn bread, pasta salad and chocolate ganache cake for the birthday.

I don't read more voraciously during a marathon, but in a more sustained way--I can tell my husband I'm busy with the read-a-thon when he wants to do something. If I'm just reading (without a purpose) he tends to think that's interruptible. (He's only an on again/off again reader).

I've been in a book funk recently, so I want to use the read-a-thon to get me out of that (although last night I stayed up til 3 a.m. to finish The Commandant by Jessica Anderson, which was fabulous).

I've got several books set aside, including The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception by Emmanuel Carrere, The Bone People by Keri Hulme, The Damnation of Theron Ware by Harold Frederic, Zaat by Sonallah Ibrahim, and The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. We'll see which one grabs. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to finish week one of Life A User's Manual for the group read.

I'll probably be here the next 3-4 hours.

What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 331 pages

Did you finish any books this hour? Nope...

How many books have you finished during the readathon? 1

The menu: just some Perrier.

Any distractions? watched a TV series episode on iTunes. Dunno quite how that happened! Back to the books now.

Others on my want to read soon list include Death in the City of Light by David King, the new Louise Penny mystery, Little Bee by Chris Cleave and Cooking with Fernet Branca by James Hamilton-Paterson for my Europa Challenge. Expect I will dip into a couple of these.

I know I've got a copy of Life A User's Manual somewhere, but I can't find it. And the library can't find its only copy, so I've requested an inter-library loan. Or I suppose I could fork over money to buy another one... Sigh...

HOUR 9 OF THE READATHON (my personal hour 0)

Good morning everybody! You’ve already done some very nice reading! Its almost 7.15 am and I just wanted to check in, before I start my book Die Mittagsfrau by Julia Franck .

Originally I planned to sit with my morning coffee and a croissant near the pond in my parent’s garden - but the heavy rain is ruining my plan. :) But sitting on the couch with some tea and a blanket isn't that bad either!

Let the calm Sunday morning reading begin!

Suz I'm in but on and off, not for hours at a time... It's 7.30 here and I've just managed half an hour of City of Thieves, which I'd like to finish today. It's really exciting.

The menu: toast with New Zealand marmite and a latte from my wonderful Nespresso machine

Distractions: 2 kids on the Wii playing Mario, one of whom wants her breakfast.

Objectives for the readathon: to read a bit more than I would have anyway. Both the books I'm reading are fantastic and I'd like to finish City of Thieves and make a big dent in Lords of Finance.

summer doldrums: our summer here in Basel has been pretty nice this year, with not too many stinking hot days. I don't like heat! My reading patterns change because the kids are home for two months more than because of the weather. I get lots read but in small chunks of ten minutes...

My résumé for the last hours:

HOUR 12 of the readathon (my personal hour 3, 10 a.m.)

Actual reading time : ~ 2 h 30 min

What did you read this hour? (Titles) : Die Mittagsfrau by Julia Franck

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? Just this one. It's the only one I am planning to read.

How many pages did you read this hour? Somehow I am reading very slowly... 88 pages so far.

What's the total # of pages for this readathon? 388 pages.

Did you finish any books this hour? No.

How many books have you finished during the readathon? Zero.

The menu: For breakfast a cup of black tea and bread with butter and marmelade; another cup of tea; a cup of coffee.

Any distractions? When my family got up, too, it was difficult to concentrate - also when the our dog started barking for no reason.

I'm still awake, but just not reading very consistently.

I know what you mean about dogs barking for no reason -- I have cats that do extremely strange and inexplicable things, usually in the middle of the night. I swear it's to mess up my sleeping.

I am going to hit the hay soon, though. I have nearly finished Midnight Rising!

HOUR: 16+

What did you read this hour? I haven't actually done much reading in this hour at all, I've been online and getting distracted by the local news - riots and looting. It started with a peaceful protest over the police shooting a bloke last week, but at some point the looters moved in and apparently people (probably from all over, not this area necessarily) have been coming in their cars to loot at Tottenham Hale and Wood Green.

What books have you read from in this readathon so far?

Jake Wallis Simons, The English German Girl
Roger Moorhouse, Berlin at War 1939-45
Catherine O'Flynn, What Was Lost
Patricia Wastvedt, The German Boy
Laura Schwartz, A Serious Endeavour
Barbara Pym, Jane and Prudence
Margaret James, The Silver Locket

I'm particularly enjoying The English German Girl and Berlin at War is interesting too. The Silver Locket, a romantic historical from Choc Lit, is a good read too, actually they're all worth reading.

And once again I've given up on Emma, I think the problem is that I dont really like any of the characters, so it's hard work being interested in what happens to them. But for now it's back to RL, who knows I might be able to convince myself to pick up Emma again

What did you read this hour? (Titles): The Sky Mystery Magic and Myth

What books have you read from in this readathon so far? A Distant Mirror; King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, The Sky Mystery, Magic and Myth and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle

Do you have a favorite, or anything you'd recommend to the rest of us? All of them in their different ways.
The Tuchman is worth persevering with - a fascinating look at the 14th century, though I did get a bit lost on occasion with all the various names and titles.
The Wind-up Bird Chronicle is quirky and bizarre - I'm really enjoying it
So far the King Arthur is a good re-telling of the legend, Green draws from many sources though I think the major one is Malory.
The Sky Mystery Magic and Myth is a beautifully illustrated look at various myths and stories about things associated with the sky - a charming and entertaining read. For a readathon it was quite good to spend some time looking at pictures, not just reading text:)
