Anyone else started giving any thought to 12 in 12 or whatever for 2012?
I could probably reach 144 books but I'm trying to think of some variation.

Include a few categories for Short Stories and/or poetry and/or magazine articles and/or comics and/or any other short works.
That's my plan anyway.

#2 I was thinking of Kindle shorts as my 12th category.
If I went with less than 144, I've been thinking about half fiction categories and half nonfiction and then a stepladder approach for each side.
12/12, 11/11, 10/10, 9/9, 8/8 for a total of 114.

That too :) I read (I am behind but technically I still pretend to) a lot of online fiction magazines that publish a few stories every few weeks/months. Amazon shorts will fit the bill as well. I follow a few history journals where I read only selected articles. Things like that.
A stepped one can work as well. :)
Or you can always go for categories that can be assigned to a book together: Debut novels, British authors, something like that - and then just use these on books from other categories.

The step challenge is working out well for me this year. I could do 12 categories ranging from 1 to 12, with 2 bonus categories of 12 books each for 102. Or I could do monthly themes. I tried that 3 years ago and it worked out well for me. I think my tentative categories would work better with a step challenge, though.

#5 I'm thinking of that step I mentioned above though, and not all the way down to 1.
I love my categories for this year--there's only 2 or 3 that I'd dump or tweak a bit.

I've really thought about it a lot. I don't believe that I can do 12 in 12 (144) so I've got two options in mind: first, a half dozen in 12 = 72. Then when I finish that one, I can work on bonus ½ of a half dozen for another 36. My other option is 121212 with 20+12 overlaps = 112.
I have my categories already picked out - I like working with a theme (2011 was a love affair with books - each category titled for a part of your relationship as it grows, i.e. blind dates, engagements, etc.) 2012 I had several but have decided theme wise on High School Reunion (it's been 40 yrs in 2012 since I graduated so I thought I would pay tribute to that milestone.)
Here are my categories for next year....
Class schedule - Nook Books (any type)
Study Hall - group reads or recommended by LTers including ERs
Home Economics - crafts and home themed books
History - US President's Challenge and background reconstruction thru 1900
English Lit - mysteries set in Great Britian
Lunch - culinary and game themed books
Foreign languages - foreign settings
Speech Class - Audiobooks
Math - 1st,2nd, 3rd….. Series books (they have to be the right number in the series)
Geography - euro and 50 state challenges
Extra curricular activites - romances/ youth
Homework - TBRs
Graduation - overflows
I'm still tweaking the number but the categories are set.
