How did our US East coasters fair this weekend?

My thoughts had gone out to members on the American east coast. I suppose it was the kind of weather to stay indoors and read a bit more.

And while the US was battered by "Irene", a similar strength typhoon "Namadol" was harassing Taiwan over the weekend.

New York City was much less badly affected than feared, but the suburban areas and further north in the Catskills and Vermont were really hard hit with flooding because of all the rain on already saturated ground. In fact, the Catskills, where my family has a house (which thankfully is OK except for flooding in the basement), were pretty much devastated, with massive flooding, bridges out, roads damaged, trees and power lines down, and such widespread power and phone outages (and such damaged roads) that there are no estimated restoration times. Not widely reported, because it's poor rural area, but it will be a long, long road for the people who live there.

Rebecca, glad you and the house in the Catskills are OK. That is very sad about the flooding. I've sort of out of touch with news, but I heard a little about the severe flooding in Vermont.

Edwin, that's the first I've heard about Namadol.

I hope TomcatMurr is high and dry. Cats dislike water.

Thanks, Dan. What happened in the Catskills is similar to what happened in Vermont: small, rural communities up tiny roads in mountain valleys.

NYC faired pretty well, though shutting down the subways did ruin my hurricane party plans. The flooding elsewhere is very bad though. I was trying to do a count of how many hurricanes I've been through. I think over 20 now.

5 - Murr said it turned at the last minute and so was not so bad.
