I haven't read that but kelly armstrong has witches, among plenty of other supernatural creatures. I also remember Jinx which doesn't really focus on the magic system so much as the consequences of magic but it's still a very awesome book.

There is Michael Scott's series of Nicholas Flamel the Alchemyst (Dumbledore's friend in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone).

#5 - reading the 6th book now! I love that series and how dorky Harry can be

Yes - you can count on the dorkiness, but trying to do the right thing, throughout. :-)

Hah, very true. Those are my favorite type of main characters, amazing, can totally destroy you if you get on his bad side, but not perfect and definitely not invulnerable!
