The four girls are all sisters and each part is about their lives when they turn sixteen years old. Part one, is about Rose who is the oldest sister of four. She is a very pretty girl who loves to sing and act. When she turns sixteen, she is going through a very hard time because her father had died a couple months before her birthday. Even though she goes through many hard times, she learns more about herself and also about others.
PEARL TOPICS
P: (political/historical) The Walker family, lives in an old Victorian Style house in Hawk Harbor, Maine. They live in a very small town with one grocery store and one bank and share a high school with many other towns. This set up was a very common one many years ago and is still today. Norwood Young America is an excellent example of a town just like Hawk Harbor.
E: (ethical/moral/religious) The only religious connection that I believe could be made so far, is that the Walkers go to church and celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter. This would mean that their religion most likely believes in Jesus Christ. The family attends church services to celebrate these holidays.
A: (theme) So far, I think that the possible theme would be to stay strong and believe in yourself no matter what happens.
Example One: Since Rose is the oldest in her family, many responsibilities are forced upon her after her father dies. She has to help a lot more around the house and also get a job to help her mother support her family. At first, she spends a lot of time wishing that her father would come back, but then realizes that he is gone and that she will have to try her hardest to stay strong for her family's sake.
Example Two: After Rose discovers that her boyfriend cheated on her, the world seemed like it was coming to an end. She realized that no matter how much it hurt, she would get over him and move on to someone better.
Questions/comments/criticisms:
This book is a very good one that makes you want to keep reading. I feel like I can relate to many of the things that happen to the characters in the story, which makes me want to read more! The story has many very good family values and implies that family is a really important part of a teenagers life. I agree with this greatly and can relate because me and my family are very close.

Brief Plot Summary: For most of this section it was still in part one, Rose. After Rose breaks up with Parker, she starts hanging out and spending a lot of time with a boy named Stephen. He used to hang out with Parker and his sister is the girl that Parker cheated on Rose with. Rose was kind of friends with him before she broke up with Parker but never that close. At first Rose is a little mad at Stephen because he knew that Parker was cheating on her and didn't let her know. After a while she gets over it and they date each other. One night Stephen comes over for dinner and he decides that he loves her crazy family. He plays with Rose's sisters and has a good time. Later that evening, he told Rose that he signed her up for voice lessons that his parents can pay for. Rose really wants to be a singer and would be excited about the present but she takes it the wrong way. She thinks that Stephen is trying to tell her that her voice isn't very good. She breaks up with him and avoids him completely. At Christmas time, Stephen left a gift on the porch for Rose. A few days later, her friends took Rose out to the Rusty Nail for a suprise. Stephen is there and he and Rose's sisters sing Rose's favorite Beatles song. After the song, they end up getting back together to try dating again. Rose's family moves into a new house above a bakery and her whole family is sad to leave their old house with all of its memories. Then part two, Daisy, begins. It starts off on Daisy's sixteenth birthday when her family and Stephen are celebrating her birthday together. Her mom also invited a man named Hal whom which she is starting to spend time with. Rose was the closest of the girls to her dad before his death and thinks that this is unfair to her father. She just wishes that her dad could come back. Rose lives at home while Stephen goes to college far away from her. She misses him a lot and is always talking to him on the phone every night.
PEARL TOPICS
P: (political/historical) See above. There was nothing that i could find to fit into this category so far.
E: (ethical/moral/religious) See above. Also, I don't think it was the right for Rose to believe that Stephen thought her voice sounded bad. If she would have just realized in the first place she wouldn't have had to go through all of this trouble.
A: (theme) So far, I think that the possible theme would be to stay strong and believe in yourself no matter what happens.
Example One: After Rose breaks up with Stephen, she is very sad. She overcomes the sadness and eventually forgives him. In order for Stephen to show Rose how much he cares about her, he performs one of her favorite songs to a crowd of people!
Example Two: Moving to a new house was hard for the whole family because that was the house where their dad had lived with them. They had many memories that they don't want to ever forget.
Questions/comments/criticisms:
This book just keeps getting better and better as the story goes on!
I can understand why Daisy would get angry if her mother started to date another guy after her dad had died. I just think that she should talk to her mom about it instead of being rude to everyone else about it.

Brief Plot Summary: In this section of the book, I finished Daisy's part. Daisy could be described as a very hardworker. She is an overachiever and always does her best. She is very athletic and is in soccer. Also, she works at the hospital and lately hasn't been getting enough sleep. She meets a friend at the hospital named Ben who has cancer and finds herself looking forward to being able to see him there. Daisy slipped in one of her soccer matches and tore a ligament in her leg. The doctor tells her that she can't play for three months! Daisy meets a boy named Peter at the gas station and loves him at first sight. When she starts hanging around with Peter, her grades start slipping and she starts to not care about the important things in her life. Daisy shaves her head and dies her hair black and starts to look like some of Peter's friends. Peter gets himself into trouble and Daisy eventually finds out that he isn't who she thought he was and that she can do better! After she breaks up with Peter, Daisy gets back on the right track and starts hanging out with her old friends again. Daisy's mom talks to her and explains to Daisy why she likes Hal so much. Daisy and Hal end up getting a chance to talk and Daisy decides that he isn't so bad after all!
PEARL TOPICS
P: (political/historical) See above. There was nothing that i could find to fit into this category so far.
E: (ethical/moral/religious) In this section, the Walker family attends church service on Easter Sunday! I do not think that it was the right thing for Peter to do when he stole money from the store! He said that he gave twenty of it to his aunt to pay for the rent but I think that he should have kept his job instead of stolen the money.
A: (theme) I think the theme is that in the end, being yourself is always the better option.
Example One: After Daisy and Peter break up, Daisy starts to be herself again and she is a lot healthier mentally and physically. Although she didn't want to admit it, she had more fun being herself.
Example Two: When you be yourself, others start treating you how you want to be treated! When Daisy dates Peter, her friends and family begin to treat her differently. After they break up, they begin to treat her how they used to.
Questions/comments/criticisms:
I am very glad that Daisy broke up with Peter because I think she could have gotten herself into a lot of trouble if she would have stayed with him!
Now that I have finished two parts of the book, I am excited to read the other sister's stories to find out what they will be like when they are sixteen!

I was glad when she dumped Parker because he could not accept her for who she was. I also like your theme, I think it very well fits this book!:)
3ALarson14
I know right? He basically cheated on her because she is poor! How rude!! I would dump a boy if he didn't like me because of how much money I have!! :)

Excellent first entry! I especially liked your connection to your own hometown! Great examples on theme also...keep up the thoughtful commenting!

I thought the same thing! I have never read a book about four sisters each with their own part in the book, that takes place when they turn sixteen! I like how it also tells you how all of the different characters have changed over the years! :)

Brief Plot Summary: Part three, is about Laurel the third oldest daughter. Laurel is a very shy girl that loves pets. She wants to be a veterinarian when she is older and right now she volunteers at the Wildlife Rescue Center. Laurel is very close to a boy named Jack. They have played together since they were very little and they both love nature. On Laurel's birthday, she goes to the Wildlife Rescue Center to volunteer and her boss hires her to work there as a real job! Laurel is very excited because she loves working with animals. When she goes home, her family and friends throw a birthday party for her. At the party, Rose and her boyfriend Stephen, announce that they are engaged and getting married in the spring! Rose tells her sisters that they will all be bridesmaids in her wedding and asks Daisy to be her maid of honor. After they eat cake, Laurel opens her presents. Jack gives her a puppy that she instantly falls in love with and names her Snickers! Jack is secretly in love with Laurel and she doesn't want to be anything but friends with him. Jack starts spending time with other girls instead of Laurel to make her jealous but instead it makes her sad. Daisy and Laurel take Snickers on a walk and have a deep conversation together and then later that night, Daisy has to leave to go back to college. it was raining very hard when Daisy left and her mom told her to drive safe. Laurel was about to fall asleep that night when her mom ran into her room and told her their was a car accident. Immediately, Laurel knew it was Daisy. When her mom and Hal return from the hospital they share the horrible news that Daisy is dead. The next week, after the funeral, Laurel returns to school but can't make it the whole day. Jack drives her home and she finds her mom in Daisy's old room sobbing. A different day, when Laurel comes home, she finds that she is the only one there! She gets scared so she calls Jack and he comes over. After he comforts Laurel, they end up kissing. Jack breaks up with his girlfriend and they decide to date. At first, it all seems perfect but then Laurel figures out that she actually like Carlos, a boy she works with. Since Daisy died, Rose gives Laurel the job of being maid of honor and she is responsible for organizing a wedding shower. She decides to have it at the WRC and Rose ends up loving it. Because she breaks up with him, Jack decides not to talk to Laurel anymore. He thinks that if she doesn't want to date him, they can't be friends. Lily starts talking to a guy on the internet and at one point plans to run away. Thankfully, Laurel catches her and persuades her not to. Rose and Stephen get married and at their wedding, Laurel and Jack become friends again.
PEARL TOPICS
P: (political/historical) See above. There was nothing that i could find to fit into this category so far.
E: (ethical/moral/religious) In this section, the Walker family attends church service for Daisy's funeral, celebrates Christmas and also goes to Rose's wedding. I am do not think that Jack should have given up his and Laurel's friendship just because she didn't want to date him. If he was truly a good friend, he would have respected her decision especially because she tried dating him and it didn't work out. Also, I do not think that it was the right thing for Lily to get in a relationship with a man on the internet and plan to run away. Who knows if she could have died as well if she would have ended up running away from her home.
A: (theme) I think the theme of this section would be to always believe in yourself.
Example One: At first, Laurel isn't very confident and Lily makes fun of her for it. She basically tells Laurel that she isn't good at anything and that she always screws up. This doesn't give Laurel very good self esteem and she worries about everything she does. Her mom finally has a talk with her and explains to her that she is actually good at a lot of things.
Example Two: When Jack tells Laurel that he loves her and she thinks to herself that she doesn't really love him back, she does something about it. After breaking up with Jack, he treats her very unkindly but she is glad that she made the decision because she is a lot happier. This shows that she believed in herself enough that she could be happy with her decision.
Questions/comments/criticisms:
I think that everyone can relate with Laurel in the way that there has been at least one point in your life where you experience low self esteem. It isn't fun when people tease you for your weaknesses or put you down but if you stay strong and believe in yourself, your self esteem will most likely go back up!
I think it is very horrible that their family has to deal with the death of their father as well as one of their sisters. Death is something that can change your life and also put you in a lot of misery.
~Ashley Larson
