TagMash Challenge:

TagMash using 2 tags (one seldom-used tag; one much-used tag) from any 75er's tag page. (Note the tags.)

PS: If you've chosen someone's tag page who uses prefixes/codes attached to their tags: On the challenge wiki, when you note the tags, you may note the simple version of the tag.

Short and simple instructions:

Read a book found by doing a TagMash using tags from your own or another member's tag page. Choose one infrequently used tag and one tag with very frequent uses. I'm not specifying a quantity, since frequency varies member to member.

Super easy! But I'll also add step-by-step instructions, since I know this group has quite a few members who are new to LibraryThing, and may not have discovered that wonderful tool – TagMash!

TagMash Challenge. Step by step instructions:

Step 1:
Open a tag page - your own or one from any other member of this group. To get there: Click on a member name to get to the profile page. Click “see all tags”.

Step 2:
Sort that page by COUNT. (This step isn't actually necessary, just makes it easier to 'see' the tag counts.)

Step 3:
Choose one infrequently used tag.
Choose one frequently used tag.
(Number of uses is shown next to the name of the tag.)

Here is a section of a member's tag page as a sample; I'm choosing diary and civil war:

Step 4:
Enter your two tags, separated by a comma, in the search box at the top of the page.

When you use the search box at the top of LT pages, the results shown are Works. So,

Step 5:
Click the number beside TAGS in the left column.

Step 6:
Click “See a tagmash”



Choose any of the listed books for your challenge read.

Here is a direct link to the search page. I couldn't find a separate link to go straight to a TagMash page, but here is my tagmashed page, where you can “Try another tagmash”. If anyone has a faster link to do a tagmash, please feel free to post it!

Thanks for the link to Tagmash page. Doing a search from a member's full tag list just searches their own library so you need to do a tagmash separately.

I chose not to use my own tags for this since I have only properly tagged the books I've read, so TBR is the most frequent tag and there are not enough interesting ones to choose from. So I chose another member with overlapping book reading interests (CatyM) and chose the tags 'Christianity' (410) and 'Europe', (8) which produced many options. One of these is a book I have just received via Bookmooch: The Hiding Place, so I'll go for that one. Another option was The Rule of St Benedict so if there's time I'll try to read that one too.

I also went to CatyM's page (she is the first name on the members with your books page) and used one of her popular tags (@Second-hand 517) with one of her unpopular ones (Urban Fantasy) and the tagmash brought up American Gods by Neil Gaiman which I was planning to read in November anyway. I should add that I didn't have that book in mind when I selected her tags!

I have added American Gods as a joint read with Heather, and then I went to SusieSharp's page and using Southern Fiction (31) and Coming-of-Age (1), I came up with Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas, it looks interesting so I am going to order it from the library.

I used cbl_tn's library, searched mystery (763) and Latvia (1) to come up with The Dogs of Riga by Henning Mankell.
