Wow, I just logged on to the FS website and was overwhelmed by the latest renewal offers! There's a choice of FOURTEEN different sets, all free with purchase of four books (two immediatley, two by March 2012). The sets are:

(1) Gormenghast trilogy

(2) The Desert War Trilogy

(3) Chekhov's Collected Stories

(4) Byzantium

(5) Mapp and Lucia

(6) Christians and Pagans

(7) Winnie the Pooh

(8) E Nesbit Collection (6 vols)

(9) Pax Britannica

(10) Wyndham (3 vols)

(11) Lord of the Rings

(12) Campaigns of Napoleon

(13) Adventures of the Three Musketeers

(14) Dickens (3 vols)

Not a bad selection by any means, and furthermore accompanied by a calender and a book about 'picturesque word origins'!

Looks good, but can't see it yet. I'm still being offered the Plutarch. Hope it's the usual website issue because this is the offer I had been waiting for.

Nov 2, 2011, 6:06 pm

Oh yes, now this offer would get me. I'm still seeing the Pooh and extras. Benson or Wyndham, Benson or Wyndham...

Nov 2, 2011, 6:39 pm

Drat! Should have waited for this offer instead of taking the credit. The Chekhov set is more than twice the offered credit!

5Svartalf

Thats a darn good offer. I am still seeing the Pooh for now.

6P3p3_Pr4ts
Nov 2, 2011, 7:13 pm

still the Plutarch in ROW :-(

Pagans and Christians has been in and out of my basket since June

7WinterGloaming
Nov 2, 2011, 7:35 pm

Still Plutarch for me as well, I log in under the "world" flag for what its worth.

Already know I am not going to renew with Plutarch though.

8SpoonFed
Nov 2, 2011, 7:59 pm

I'm seeing this too - I'm thinking of taking the Chekhov freebie with the new Ripley set and one more volume in order to get Just My Type for free as well.

Nov 2, 2011, 11:59 pm

Wow! Lots of choice! I renewed with the second offer with the Winnie the Pooh set. Part of me is regretting not waiting for this offer, but I think I would have still selected Winnie the Pooh again. Although that Wyndham set would have been tempting too...

10Willoyd
Nov 3, 2011, 2:20 am

I think that confirms that I'm happy to have renewed early with credit: just one of those sets appeals (Gormenghast), as I've got all the others that I want, and I'm mulling over whether to buy it in the current sale, where the price is pretty decent.

11nadyaduck
Nov 3, 2011, 5:04 am

Oooh! I'll go check! I was hoping for Wyndham.

12nadyaduck
Nov 3, 2011, 5:09 am

I've got the new offer, it's exactly what I was hoping for. The Winnie the Pooh looks really lovely, and the tightwad in me wants to go for something worth more than Wyndham. But Wyndham it is I reckon!

Nov 3, 2011, 10:23 am

I received a flyer in the post today only listing 8 of those sets available as renewals, but I logged on to the website and all 14 are available, some exclusively online. I'm thrilled to be able to receive the Nesbit books as a renewal offer as I adore them, so it looks like I'm a member once more!

14cdekeule

So is this new renewal offer only available for the UK?

15WinterGloaming
Nov 3, 2011, 1:41 pm

> 14

Seems like it so far, I still have Plutarch showing for me and I as earlier mentioned in the thread I log in under the "world" flag.

I wonder if I will be getting something else or the same as the others.

Also if I am not mistaken mentioned in the first post is that the offer also includes to buy two books now and the last two by march I am not sure if that is common practice outside the UK offers so that might be another indication it is UK only for now.

Nov 4, 2011, 8:20 am

Glad I waited, I will get the Lord of the Rings since that's precisely what I hoped for, but there's plenty that's tempting. I'd love the Chekov... or Gormenghast... or the Dickens... or... I suppose I'll just have to wait for the next group of offers next year ;)

17InVitrio
Nov 4, 2011, 2:51 pm

I'm glad I renewed when I did - the only sets that appeal here I already have.

18UK_History_Fan
Nov 4, 2011, 6:12 pm

Though I am by no means a fan of Folio's latest marketing strategy (agreeing with Quicksilver that it should be same offer to everyone regardless of region or currency), I can't help but observe that the comments in this post alone sort of illustrate how difficult it is for a cookie cutter strategy if you have any hope of pleasing most your membership. Some of you think the latest offer is fabulous and are glad you waited and some of you are glad you didn't and some of you are still left wanting. From my own perspective while I lust greedily for the Chekhov set and would have bought it had this been my second renewal offer, I would assign a higher priority to the Plutarxh I did in fact get. So all worked out well.

19LucasTrask
Nov 4, 2011, 6:53 pm

I agree with UK about the renewal offers. I wasn't interested in the Plutarch set, so I asked if I could substitute the Folk Tales of Britain: Narratives instead, which they agreed to. If I had waited I'm not sure when this new offer would be made available to me and if it would even be the same. So, I got a set I wanted, which has already arrived (as has The Crimson Fairy Book).

20nadyaduck
Nov 5, 2011, 11:47 am

Blast! I was so pleased with this renewal offer, but it's taking me days to choose which four books to choose to renew with. I really want the fairy books, but my usual tactic is to pick the four cheapest on my wishlist, which they certainly are not.
Ohhh Folio Society, I use far too much of my time worrying about you.

21exodus5139
Nov 5, 2011, 11:55 pm

haha, ditto!

22cronshaw
Nov 6, 2011, 7:45 am

>20 nadyaduck: I'm not sure you necessarily get best 'value' by buying the four cheapest you can find, unless you really want those books anyway. Call Of The Wild at £19.95 may seem a better buy than In Cold Blood at £27.95, for example, but actually, comparing the size, weight and bindings of the volumes, the latter seems better value on the basis of materials alone. Folio presumabably build in to their 'recommended price' a buffer of a similar cost per book to pay for the 'free' offers. The Fairy Books appear to maintain their re-sale value very well, so it could be best for you to actually buy them now against the 'free' offer!

New renewal offer is now available at £7.95.for the Rest of the World.. (those of us who log in and have a world map instead of a flag ) plus Picturesque Word Origins and The Folio Society Calendar 2012...

Edited: Nov 7, 2011, 8:28 am

>26 P3p3_Pr4ts:

Yes I saw that as well. the offer seems very good as far as selection goes, 14 sets is quite a bit.

For me however there are only two that are interesting, though they are both more interesting then Plutarch which was the former offer so I am alot closer to renew now.

Also I am a bit skeptical if there actually will be a better renewal offer down the line anyway, this is my first renewal so I do not know what I am to expect next based on previous years.

I'm in the US, hadn't yet renewed, and I got the 10% off coupon along with an invitation to renew my membership.

371dragones
Nov 12, 2011, 1:09 pm

I'm in the US, too, and didn't get the 10% off coupon. Maybe next week? :(

I am, however, very tempted to get

The Gormenghast trilogy, US$9.95 and splurge on

Audubon's Birds of America, US$185.00 (which counts as 4), and is a much higher price than I usually pay for a single book.

Freebies:

- Picturesque Word Origins
- The Folio Calendar 2012

and because the Audubon book covers the 4 book commitment,

- Just My Type would also be included

The total cost for these, including shipping, but with no voucher, is US$207.90. That would be the least I've paid for my FS membership commitment in years, and maybe the least ever. The 10% voucher would make an almost irresistable temptation for me to renew with this configuation... My cost usually runs upwards of US $220 when I take 4 single books instead of just one that counts as four.

I am disappointed that there are, at least not yet, new Aubrey-Maturin books to consider as part of this shipment - which is the main reason I am renewing anyhow. I found 13 volumes of the Aubrey-Maturin set on the FS Website... all of which reside on my shelves... am impatiently waiting for the remaining 7 volumes.

The 10% code may work for you whether you've received the code directly from Folio Society or not. Here's the code I received -- V10P. Post if it works.

The 10% code doesn't work for me (I received only the Free Postage code from FS) - I guess either accounts are credited or it's region specific, in which case it's the UK's turn to get shafted (10% discount is a better offer than postage IMO).

48InVitrio

I wish they would do away with all sales, discounts, offers etc and just be fair to all their customers and set one global price in sterling for their goods. They should charge shipping according to what deal they broker with their shipping partners.

It would certainly make life easier and be fair to everyone. However, many people are highly motivated by what they believe is a "bargain", which is why we're surrounded by bargains and yet always seem to be out of pocket!

>49 LesMiserables: While I would favour such an equitable approach, the lack of discount, sales, etc. would make the whole experience being a FS member unexciting for me personally. This happened to me a couple of years ago in relation to another free postage offer. I mentioned this to them, more in sorrow than anger, and they offered me a free book. I took Folio 60 and have been trying not to buy every book in it ever since.

>46 drasvola:. Antonio: I cannot make my own mind upon how to renew this year..:-)Too much choice plus installments pending plus TBR.) .If it was available for me -I cannot see it at this point-I'd spend it in the Gerald M.Hopkins. I own the 1970s edition: with only a portrait of the author so I positively need another that has pictures in it ..

It is quirkiness, modernism, celebrating the particular, watching the paint dry, (which works fine for me but it can get on some people's nerves). But you already know that.

ETA. If someone is to read only one short biography of Hitler (I guess a reasonable person does not have to read any more than that ,) then Haffner's The meaning of Hitler, a new publication, is the one to get. He was an exiled german lawyer turned journalist who received many compliments from historians in the field.

On the other hand, an Adolf biography in folio form? Well maybe: but as for myself I 'm folioising Arthur Rackham before any Adolf or Benito biography...

de nada, un placer :)

I just had an email to notify me that the current renewal offer will run out on December 5th. I would like to renew with the Chekhov set but I'm not sure I can afford to so close to Christmas... I may be finding out what the next offer is whether I like it or not!

70SpoonFed

Okay, so I think I'm going to break down and renew tonight - I can live on rice and beans until New Years!

But I've lost my postcard with the free delivery code on it, and I'd love to save that £9.90 if I could. Would someone be kind enough to share it?

ETA: Nevermind! A kind soul shared the code with me so there's no need to post it here. Thanks!

Edited again to add: Right, I went with the Chekhov set as my freebie and purchased:
Gerard Manley Hopkins - Selected Poems & Prose
Christina Rosetti - Goblin Market
Patricia Highsmith - Ripley Collection
And I'm getting Picturesque Word Origins and the calendar as well.

Can anyone tell me if they ran out of Just My Type? I had hoped to get that rather than Picturesque Word Origins, but it didn't come up as an offer for me. Oh well, I guess it's my own fault for waiting so long to renew!

Edited to finally add (I promise!): I contacted FS and they assured me that I'll be getting Just My Type too. Lovely and very helpful - as always in my experience!
