One Year In Wonderland: A True Tale of Expat Life in Dubai by Christopher Combe is my next book. I now have the copy, so I'm off and running... as soon as I've started my drive home from Thanksgiving.

It will be very interesting to see what the man has to say about Expat life!

I'm enjoying it. I'm not writing much because there isn't much to say. I find the humor in this book to be great. It's real-life stuff... and since it's taken from the blog of the guy who wrote it and turned it into a book, that makes complete sense. :)

It's really helping me to understand the struggles of going over to that area though, as someone not native and, I should say, as a non-Muslim. Nothing is earth shattering. It's all as I expected it would be, just put in a reminder about it all, you know?

I have to say that comments on the locals themselves can be really hilarious. And you should get your kindle to read the scene where the guy is hacking up stuff into the sink. That's hilarious!

The middle paragraph here brings to mind something I overheard in the staffroom today, (not that it was being kept a secret, just that it was not a conversation that I was a part of). One of the male members of staff was discussing his experiences of 'shaking hands' over here in Egypt. About how some of the men will not shake the hand of a woman, even if it's offered, or will cover their hand with their sleeve before doing so. As a Brit it's the most natural thing in the world to put out a hand for a handshake, but... should I here? I am self conscious about some of those small acts of protocol. I know Dubai is different - more extreme in a lot of ways, so... I'll bet it makes interesting reading...

And yes - the hacking up as read by the kindle... hillarious!

There was a part of the book where they were talking about the hand you used for touching things and the hand you used for ... taking care of personal business. It's very well explained all the way through. Highly recommended for anyone who has to stay over in that area for a long period of time, or even just for a visit. I'll post a review when I'm not on my way to my cousin's. :)

Did enjoy the movie. Going to have to put the books on a reading list, I think. After this episode, I'm convinced there's more to the books than the bad acting and horrible screen-plot leads one to believe.

It would certainly be interesting to see the difference.
