Luke 2:15-21
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."

So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

What do the various names of Jesus mean to you. The name I have pondered of late is the Messiah. Paul writes Jesus Christ, meaning Jesus who is Messiah.

Jesus, crucified on the cross, is the messiah, because he was raised.

It is that scandal of the cross that changes what our expectations are to what God has given.

Jesus is the messiah. He is not the messiah we expected, but he is the messiah who saves.

Jesus equals Joshua from the Hebrew. The most blessed aspect of that name to me is matt. 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

To be saved from our sins, so much more than I should have.

There are significant differences between the accounts of the birth and naming in Matthew and in Luke, but one common theme is that the name was announced by an angel to be Yehoshua, Yahweh is salvation.
