The Orphan Master's Son was the best book I read this year. I have a few questions:
Kim Jung Il features as a character in The Orphan Master's Son. In the interview in the back of the book, you say you did extensive research by visiting North Korea. Didn't Kim Jung Il know you were there, writing a book? And isn't there a good possibility he knew about the book before he died? Do you think he read it? Were you ever worried?
To my understanding, The Orphan Master's Son and books like it wouldn't be available in North Korea, but I imagine if anyone who has lived in North Korea read the book, it would be a shock. Was there anything in the book that wasn't exactly real in North Korea? Things you may have taken artistic license with?
I was also a bit confused by the ending. It seemed like the radio story of Jun Do's life was spinning his story negatively, but at the end decided to spin it in a positive way. Why was that?
Thank you for writing this book. It takes a lot to write a dark, unnerving, brave book, as it may push many people away. I really hope it gets the attention it deserves on its release January 10th. I'll be rooting for this for next year's Tournament of Books!
