I think it humanizes him. When he takes on the persona of The Count he loses Edmond Dantes and sort of becomes vengeance instead of a man. He has given up on himself and any chance of happiness. By finding love with Haydee, he becomes human again. I have to say that I loved that he didn't end up back with Mercedes, but moved forward again. I think it would be tempting as an author to have the two end up together, but it's not realistic that Edmond and Mercedes could put everything behind them and love again. I appreciated the introduction of Haydee to the story.

This was part of the story that surprised me because I had small idea of the story but this part I never knew about. I feel that Haydee showed Edmond how to love again and to forgive.

I agree that Haydee helped him to really believe that he had a chance to return to the human race and leave behind the avenging angel. She had a lot to leave behind as well.
