Vivian Maier, Street Photographer

A recent book with about 100-110 full page black & white street photographs taken by Vivian Maier. Most were taken, I believe, in Chicago; some in New York City, in the 1950s and, perhaps, into the 1960s. She was a quite reclusive nanny and her work was discovered posthumously by one John Maloof.

If you have an interest in 1950s Chicago, very urban, gritty photographs and a good, interesting story in general (story not in the book except sketchily, but via articles on the web), take a look. Ironically, some 30 plus folks on LT have the book and few appear to be from the Chicago area.

The most tragic part of that, to me is: "Maier lost possession of her art when her storage locker was sold off for non-payment."

I cringe every time I see those shows focused on a group of human hyenas swarming over somebody's treasured possessions, being put up for auction because they couldn't make the payment in time to keep their storage locker.

Here's a perfect example of how destructive that can be. Very sad.
