St. Cuthbert's Gospel is a small a manuscript copy of the Gospel of John. It was discovered in the coffin of St. Cuthbert, (died in 687) and is remarkably well-preserved. It is believed to be the oldest surviving intact European book.
The British Library announced (4-16-2012) the purchase of the manuscript for 9 million pounds (US$14.3 million) from the British branch of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). After a conservation review, it will go on display at the British Library in London and then in Durham, northeast England, next year.

The manuscript has been fully digitized and can be viewed at the British Library Digitized Manuscripts section.
