Hello out there. This group is currently dormant, but I'd like to try and revive it if possible.
I'm a big fan of quality sportswriting, especially if it covers my two favourite sports football & cycling. What good books on football have you read?
I'm currently reading Gary Imlach's My Father and Other Working-Class Football Heroes, which was the William Hill Sports Book of the year in 2005. So far it is excellent.
I managed to pick up a copy in unread condition for £2. At the same time I got hold of a copy of Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life by Alex Bellos for the same price. I look forward to reading it soon - maybe during the upcoming Euro 2012 championships...

Jonathan Wilson is a fine football writer: Behind the curtain and Inverting the pyramid are both good reads. Simon Kuper's books Football against the enemy and Ajax, the Dutch, the war are worth a try; and Brilliant orange is another interesting book on Dutch football. John Foot's Calcio is a good history of Italian football, and Tim Parks's A season with Verona is said to be good, tho' I haven't read that one - I've read some of Parks's journalism, and liked it.

Paul it would be great if we could expand it to sports writing generally. Am in Malaysia so the availability of many sports books is perhaps less than in the UK or USA etc but I try to read a good number of sports related books every year.
As a long suffering Leeds United fan I tend to read most things released about my team - Recently read - How Football Cheated Leeds United. Love books on most sports including Boxing, Cricket, Golf, Tennis and especially Cycling.

Paul I'd love it to be on sport generally. I was actually looking around LT for a general sports group and didn't really find one. But this group looked about right - other than being dormant - for football at least. I too like books on boxing and especially cycling! Maybe we should consider starting a sports group?

Why not mate? Don't see why this cannot be a general sports group if you are re-starting it.

Ok. Why not indeed. Invite any other LT'ers you think might be interested in a Sports group. Now to think of some threads to get going...

For anyone interested, my review of My Father and Other Working-Class Football Heroes is here

If anyone's interested in discussing the European Championships now underway in Poland and Ukraine, I have started a thread covering the games and whatever people might want to discuss here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/138220

>11 vidra: Thanks! Looks like a good one. I loved Cloughie and still think he is the all-time greatest (if one considers what he achieved, and with the clubs, and the resources, that he achieved it). I enjoyed his biography some years ago, but I'd like to get hold of a copy of this one too.
