I so loved the crushed silk boards when I saw the book in the Members' Room I had to have it! It's a gorgeous little volume and a perfect readable size. It did save me coveting the expensive, unwieldy and solander box hidden Letterpress Sonnets and Poems. I have the £7.99 Oxford Sonnets and Poems instead for the poems and it has the same commentary as the Letterpress.

It appears that this is the same version that was first printed in 1989 as the Presentation Volume for 1990. That one has the same binding but has printed paper sides. So maybe there are three versions. However, Folio 60 does not mention a cloth-sided one.

There were also three previous editons of the Sonnets, 1948, 1958 and 1972, none of them like this edition.

Yes, that is what my copy looks like. if you examine the reverse of the title page, you'll see that the sides are "printed on Canson paper". So I guess we are back to two versions of this edition.

The edition currently offered by Folio looks lovely. I will order a copy.

EDIT: By the way, does anyone here know if this edition of Shakespeare is unmodernised? It seems that if it is not, the modernisation is rather conservative. Also, I think there are at least a dozen or so engravings, yes?

The spelling is modernised. There are about one dozen engravings. As you say, a lovely book.

One of the books I have renewed with was Shakespeare's sonnets
http://www.foliosociety.com/book/SKS/shakespeare-s-sonnets

This edition has the crushed silk sides.

It I'd set in narrow Bembo. I'm not sure how this looks; does anyone have an image of this volume's innards?

A very beautiful copy.

Slipcase too tight, badly design, promise to damage that particular point every time the book leaves its slipcase.

A lot of illustrations.

Single page of glossary at the end, no other notes.

Its dimension .

Sorry for the blurry image. hand was shaking

>10 LesMiserables: Your wish is my command. This is one of the volumes I am about to post pictures of on the new Shakespeare thread later today.

And the simple answer to your question is that I think it looks great. A lovely little volume, with nice clean tex, and personally I think the typeface works well. It also has interesting (if somewhat unusual) illustrations :-)

EDIT >11 kafkachen: You beat me to it! And I am very glad you did - what great pictures, certainly a cut above mine. Instead of posting mine later, I will just link to your superior ones if that is ok.

Sure, I think I will re-post it under that thread.

>11 kafkachen: Really great pictures! Thank you so much for taking and sharing them. I also think it very likely this volume will end up in my renewal order.
