July Fantasy Thread - NO SPOILERS - The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Unlike the usual instance, I have seen the movie and now will be reading the book. I'm a little nervous because the last time this happened - with Howl's Moving Castle - I didn't like the book at all even though I loved the movie. I liked Hugo but wasn't thrilled with it so we'll see.

Morphy, I love Hugo! I've been reading it to my class for a few years now. They did a pretty good job on the movie. I enjoyed it. Can't wait to hear what others think of the book.

I read the book first, a few years ago, and watched the movie this year. I felt the same about both as Morphidae does about the movie: I liked them both but wasn't thrilled with them. I was going to reread the book for this group read, but found I wasn't actually looking forward to it. So I don't think I'll be joining in, except for lurking.

I like the book for the bits that aren't in the movie (some of them pulled the level down a bit (which makes sense for a children's movie, but for me it wasn't fun).

The big drawcard for the book, of course, are the amazing illustrations. Rather than being supplementary to the story, they help tell it.

I loved the book! I need to see the movie!
