Admittedly, it's heavy on the Achebe. Suggestions welcome, especially for works based in pre-1800s West Africa.

1. 1700s: Roots (first third) by Alex Haley
2. 1800s: Segu by Maryse Conde
3. 1800s: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
4. 1920s: Houseboy by Ferdinand Oyono
5. 1920s: Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe
6. 1930s: The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta
7. 1940s: No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe
8. 1950s: God's Bits of Wood by Sembene Ousmane
9. 1960s: Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
10. 1960s: The Devil That Danced on the Water by Aminatta Forna
11. 1970s: Anthills of the Savannah by Chinua Achebe
12. 1980s: Changes by Ama Ata Aidoo
13. 1990s: I Do Not Come to You by Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani
14. 1990s: Oil on Water by Helon Habila
15. 1990s: Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
16. 2000s: The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna

Two more, albeit by non-African writers:

1790s: Water music by T.C. Boyle (Mungo Park and the Niger)
1830s (or thereabouts): The viceroy of Ouidah by Bruce Chatwin (Dahomey slave trade)

Graphic novel rather than a novel-novel, but:

1970s: Aya and sequels by Marguerite Abouet (Ivory Coast)

Another non-African writer with a novel about the Belgian Congo:

1960s: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee has been recommended to me; haven't read it.

It's not bad, as I remember it. But South Africa, not West.
