I thought that this would not be an inappropriate place to note, and mourn, the passing of Gore Vidal. He was after all radical in his political views and a the author of some very informative historical fiction; informative to this non-American at least.
He was a constant opponent of the US war machine, the military- industrial complex, the bought and sold elected but non-representative politicians feeding at the Washington trough.
The silencing of a witty and uncompromising critic of the less savoury denizens of the political world, as well as religious fanatics of varied stripes, will come as a relief to some. It is a cause for great sadness for me personally, and I know, for many others.
