The New Yorker has a long article about Salman Rushdie and how the banning of his book affected him. I've always thought of him as a public figure, and I before this article I hadn't realized that he had never chosen to be one. It was something that happened to him.

The Disappeared: How the fatwa changed a writer’s life
She called him at home, on his private line, without explaining how she got the number. "How does it feel," she asked him, "to know that you have just been sentenced to death by Ayatollah Khomeini?"

BBC Radio 4 is currently broadcasting extracts from Joseph Anton by Salman Rushdie as their Book of the Week. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qftk - but the programmes are only available on-line for a few days.
Joseph Anton was, of course, the name adopted by Rushdie when in hiding.

Jon Stewart interviewed him on The Daily Show on Tuesday (9/18) . . . not a bad interview:

Thanks for the reminder about The Satanic Verses . . . I may try to read that during Banned Books week (coming up on 9/30).

#4 - no, those links don't work outside the US. In Canada we have to go to a different website to view them. Try the website of whatever station plays the Daily Show in the UK. Copyright, copyright.

sorry about that . . . The good news is that Rushdie seems to be getting interviewed all around the world right now (due to the new book), so there's bound to be some coverage available wherever you are . . .

Finally started The Satanic Verses yesterday . . . better late than never I suppose. :) So far, I totally loved the opening with the two "angels."
