And a comparatively easy one to start us off:
‘It’s the nose, isn’t it?’ said ——. ‘It always gives me away.’

It is one of the Igors, but which one? I am going to go with Carpe Jugulum.
4joannasephine
Pwaites has it. Men at Arms it was indeed.

"A crow cawed in one of the trees, unless it was a rook. It didn't really break the silence. It just underlined it."

BTW guys, Yay for the twentieth thread! Even though I was not here for the first. :-)
12anatwork.k
Soul Music?
22anatwork.k
I have a proposal. Let us have a hint of some kind (an extra line, a clue about the book) every day that a new quote is not guessed. It'll reduce the crazy lags we have sometimes with the more cryptic clues.
I know some people don't check LT every day so if you feel a new clue a day is not reasonable shout out.
What do people think?

I think it's a good idea.
It's not Lords and Ladies, so here's the two proceeding lines:
"'Peaceful, isn't it," said ____.
"Quiet as the grave," said ____. "Ha, ha."

The Fifth Elephant? Mainly because that sounds like two watch officers on guard and the rook/crow cawing sounds like Uberwald.
31pwaites
pinkozcat's got it - Johnny and the Dead it is!

... had imagined that wizards would be powerful demi-gods able to change the world at a flick of a finger, and then he'd grown up and found that they were tiresome old men who worried about the state of their feet and, in harm's way, would even bicker about the origin of the phrase 'in harm's way'.
37joannasephine
Ponder Stibbons, The Last Continent?
39joannasephine
Someone else take it please?
40Nahkis
From what I understand of the previous post is that the "quoter's" spot is up for grabs. If that is not the case, please ignore the following:
"There was sherry. There was always sherry at these occasions."
"There was sherry. There was always sherry at these occasions."
41anatwork.k
Night Watch?
43Nahkis
Neither of those, but you're on the right tracks. Here's what follows:
"Sam Vimes could regard it dispassionately, since he always drank fruit juice these days."

44eclecticdodo
thud?
46anatwork.k
Changing my guess to Snuff, if that is okay.
47Nahkis
You're still a bit off, so here's another tip. Hope it helps:
Think of land ownership issues, war, and Curious Squid.
p.s. I don't mind you changing your guess

"The moo started off low and rose slowly. It was a visceral sound that had rolled across the ancient tundra and told early man that here came dinner or death, and either way it was pissed off."
55mabith
Carrot says it, but so does Granny Weatherwax. I think it's Lords and Ladies.
56edrandrew
In this instance mabith has it as I got it from Lords and Ladies, wherever else it may also appear.
57mabith
The sentiment is always expressed a bit differently between the characters/books. I don't think Carrot ever has the "People just think it is," he thinks much too highly of everyone else.
Anyway, here's mine:
"I want to eat chocolates in a great big room where the world is a different place."

Monstrous Regiment, Lofty I think.

"Asking someone to repeat a phrase you'd not only heard very clearly but were also exceedingly angry about was around Defcon II in the lexicon of squabble."
61joannasephine
I think you're being a tricky trickster -- Monstrous Regiment again?
67anatwork.k
Lords and Ladies with Granny and Magrat?
71joannasephine
An early blow up between Granny and Nanny? Witches Abroad?
72anatwork.k
Ok, going to *my* second guess which was any of the Tiffany books: Wintersmith.
74joannasephine
Right:
Could you stop pointing that sharp bacon at me?
Could you stop pointing that sharp bacon at me?
75pinkozcat
Back to my default answer: Unseen Academicals
76anatwork.k
I am waiting for the second hint (or someone else to guess correctly) since I have no idea which book this line is from. I am very perplexed.
78pinkozcat
I don't think that Cohen and his mob would be afraid of a bit of bacon. I reckon it is more like Casanunder or Nobby.
79edrandrew
I find myself thinking of Vimes at Harga's (or is it Hagar's) House of Ribs. I'll try Guards! Guards!
80joannasephine
Not so far, so I’ll add the next bit of the exchange. And invite you to think about who is associated with bacon and other foods cooked in a similar manner …
‘Could you stop pointing that sharp bacon at me?’
‘I asked you a question, young woman!’
‘Could you stop pointing that sharp bacon at me?’
‘I asked you a question, young woman!’
81pinkozcat
It should be Susan in Hogfather but I have just re-read the book and it should be sacrilegious to mention bacon in that context ... and i don't remember reading it there.. but ...
82anatwork.k
As far as I know, Vimes is the only one associated with Bacon. Except I can't think of anyone saying something like "Could you stop..." to Vimes specially after he becomes His Nibs the Grand High Duke of Blah Blah...
Anyway, I will go with Thud.
Anyway, I will go with Thud.
83joannasephine
Oooh, so close … I’m just not saying which of you …
85joannasephine
No ... but warm.
;-)
;-)
86anatwork.k
Well based on hints it seems to be Albert. However I will let Minnie take it because it was her guesses. :-)
88joannasephine
No ... and getting a little cooler, Minnie.
89AnnieMod
Albert and Susan in Soul Music?
I am pretty sure for Susan but I might be mistaking Albert's name...

90pinkozcat
I'll round off the guesses with Thief of Time
91joannasephine
Annie Mod has it – Soul Music, and yes, it’s the first meeting between Susan and Albert.

Not that the wages were important, of course. What was important was that she was being her Own Person and holding down a Real job. And being a governess was a real job. The only tricky bit had been the embarrassment when her employer found out that she was a duchess, because in Mrs ___'s book, which was a rather short book with big handwriting, the upper crust wasn't supposed to work. It was supposed to loaf around.

"It's not perfect, but it works. The thing about stories is that you have to pick the ones that last."
101joannasephine
I have so got to go back and reread Maurice!
102pinkozcat
I've got to so go back and read them all. I have just finished reading Hogfather but ronincats beat me to the draw on the quote from that book.
103mabith
101 - If you can find the audio book, it's well worth listening to. Such a good book made even better by Briggs' voice for Maurice.
104anatwork.k
Lol Maurice was my gut feeling but I second guessed. Glad I didn't miss it. ;)

Or is this Maskerade, and Nanny's foray into the dark world of publishing and drooping knickers?
(I just reread what I typed. Sorry about that.)
(I just reread what I typed. Sorry about that.)
108anatwork.k
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh I want to see Nanny dropping her knickers. Actually, scratch that, I don't...
And no, it is none of those. I felt the urge to be as completely cryptic (that is NOT a hint) as I liked since you all will be getting more clues. :-)

110anatwork.k
Nope.
111pinkozcat
I don't suppose that it was Lords and Ladies? I know that Verance sent away for a sex manual but was obliged to get some help from Casanunder when (sorry for this) push came to shove.
112anatwork.k
My, my all the naughty jokes are coming out to play. ;)
No it is not L&L although it was an excellent leap. Here is another line from further down the passage (sorry about the late post -- I went to watch skyfall tonight and forgot I hadn't posted another hint yet)
...sometimes when they were really hungry they created vast banquets in their imagination...

114anatwork.k
Nope. I haven't read it either.
116joannasephine
Or are we in Small Gods, and the wonderful world of desert herming?
117anatwork.k
Neither but here is the whole thing to (hopefully) make all clear. :)
He'd noticed that sex bore some resemblance to cookery: it fascinated people, they sometimes bought books full of complicated recipes and interesting pictures, and sometimes when they were really hungry they created vast banquets in their imagination - but at the end of the day they'd settle quite happily for egg and chips. If it was well done and maybe had a slice of tomato.

119anatwork.k
Nope. Not Death and not the Witches.
120joannasephine
Oh, it's Sam Vimes, isn't it? Argh, but which one? Picking randomly, Night Watch?
(On the off chance that I get it, someone else will have to take my turn -- our earthquake repairs have finally started, and the Pratchetts were the first things I made sure were packed safely away.)

121edrandrew
I find myself thinking of Vetinari - but that doesn't narrow the field much. I'll hav a random stab at Making Money.
122pinkozcat
I'll guess Men at Arms
123anatwork.k
No, no and no but you guys are getting a lot warmer! :)
125anatwork.k
No but closer!
128anatwork.k
Joannasephine got it. It is indeed The Fifth Elephant.
129joannasephine
Hooray! But someone else will have to take it. Edrandrew or Pinkozcat, you haven’t set one for a while. Whoever nabs it first.
130pinkozcat
OK - I'll take it with an easy one ...
In the nature of things his very important job tended to take him to rickyards and dark cellars and the inside of cats ...

133pinkozcat
No, not Soul Music
138anatwork.k
Oh Dear. Alright we will go with something easy.

Yup! Take it away pwaites.
144mabith
Lords and Ladies? There's a lot of trousers of time business there...
147pwaites
It's not Lords and Ladies.
150pinkozcat
I'll go out on a limb and guess Moving Pictures
152anatwork.k
The Last Hero? But if I'm right, someone else take it!
154guido47
Sorry for this 'interrupt'.
And NO, I have never got one.
But, but if I ever were to get one, would it be OK
to use a really obscure DW book.
Thus a few days ago I got Turtle recall and
"the Compleat Ankh-morpork"
Sorry had to use a direct link for the last on, No touchstones.
Now both of these are only owned by about a dozen members. And strangly not the Usual suspects I see on this thread.
Guido.

#154 I don't think that it is playing the game to use really obscure books which very few of us have read, just as it is cheating to look phrases up on the internet.
I must say that I get very tired of guessing quotes which I have no chance at all of getting correct because they are from really obscure books and on the odd occasion when I have looked up the quote I have disqualified myself.

Er, Pinkozcat,
I was just asking if it's OK to use a reference which "only" 12 or so members own. To wit the books I mentioned above.

Googling is cheating, but please continue on with the game. I know that one day I will get one.

OooooHhhhh The Compleat Ankh Morpork looks pretty! :)
To add my 2 cents to the discussion, I don't think it is very fair to use completely obscure quotes although I will admit that I once used a quote from the Ankh-Morpork Map and once from The Art of Discworld but Annie got them both times so...
OTOH since we don't actually have any rules written down (as far as I am aware) its probably not against the rules. So use your own judgment I say.

Anyone mind if I have a go at playing the game rather than debating the rules? I'll try Science of Discworld II: The Globe
161guido47
Yep. Ana,
I do rather like the 'classified pages'.
Very "Victorian" & very DW!
Sorry 'edrandrew'.
Please excuse me for interrupting and please do continue.
Guido.

I can buy big and strong anywhere. Right now I need a man who knows how to hold a pencil without breaking it.
179mabith
That's the thing with Pratchett, there are so many great little quotes that could be a part of any book that this game does mostly come down to guessing.
180pinkozcat
I try to make the quotes I use reasonably easy. I think that we have been discouraging some people by trying to make things too hard.
186mabith
"A marriage is always made up of two people who are prepared to swear that only the other one snores. "
192mabith
Nope. Hint: Feet of Clay was a closer guess.
195pwaites
"'You're dead,' he said. ___ waited. She couldn't think of any suitable reply. 'I'm not' lacked a certain style, while 'Is it serious?' seemed somehow too frivolous."
