In 2013, I'm going set up monthly group reads with three books from each of the four lists we compiled. This thread is to determine which mystery books from 50 Mysteries to Read Before They Find the Body we are going to be reading.

I've set up a list of the books to nominate from. On the list are books that I have not read and am willing to read.

Please nominate three to five books to read in 2013. Try to keep in mind that I don't do well with dense or "lyrical" writing.

List of books:

Because I dropped the ball on this, we won't have time for voting. I'll give about a week or so for nominations, then I'll select three with the highest number of nominations.

Either Daughter of time or Brat Farrar
A free man of color
Any of the Dorothy L. Sayers.

The only book that I haven't read, but would like to is The Man Who was Thursday.

The books that I would most like to re-read are:
The Nine Tailors or Gaudy Night
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency
The Westing Game

a dark- adapted eye is one of the best mysteries I've ever read. Early Rendell. Also gorky park by Martin Cruz Smith which is outstanding. I think these are on the list.

Another vote for Gorky Park - missed that when I looked at the list.

No 1 Ladies or Dark-Adapted Eye would be my choice.

A Strong Poison
Brat Farrar
The Gyrth Chalice Mystery (Look to the Lady - American title)
The Franchise Affair
A Rare Benedictine

In another one of those serendipitous occurrences, both of those Josephine Tey titles are ones that will be in my library in hard cover editions before New Year's. Again, Morphy, It is a SIGN, just as I said about the non-fiction titles!

I've got two of those, the third I'm pretty sure I can find. :)

I loved The Nine Tailors. I have a copy of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and would love to read it along with you. I do not want to read Gorky Park again. I kind of burned out on Cold War Spy novels a ways back.

Hooray, I just bought a copy of Gorky Park for £1, on the off-chance that it would be picked!

Even if it wasn't picked, it's awesome and one of my favorite books. Arkady is one hell of a cop and one of the most intriguing characters I've read. I re-read the series from time to time and hope it continues.

Oh and I don't remember any spy bits in any of them. Sure, they're political, but not like le Carre or such.

Bookmarque, that is true. It is just that I was reading so much of the spy genre and it often was set in Russia and I just associated it.

It's been so long since I read Gorky Park, I've forgotten pretty much all of it. It will be like a new read!

Addendum: I read it after the movie came out...and I just looked it up: 1983! No wonder I've forgotten it...
