Chèli's Cheering for her ROOT in 2013

So I'm here to cheer for Books that I already own!
2011 I set a goal to read 60 of the books I owned, finished with 65. I had added 111 books (not counting my Christmas purchases. So a net +46.

2012 I set a goal of 80 (Nook books/Net Galley 25, Audio books 30, and ARDs 25). I believe that I will finish with 95 (Nook books/Net Galley 37, Audio books 30, and ARDs 28). But again, I've added more than 150. Net gain 55+

That makes 100 books added even though I took out nearly 150.

So in 2013, I'm upping my goal again to 105. I really need to do this because in 2012 I may have only purchased 25 books but I also received another 25 in Giveaways, ARCs, ERs and Net Galleys, and over 100 in free books through programs like Book Bub and gifts. This means that game of TBRs has more playing pieces instead of getting fewer. I need to up my ROOTs this year to try to score more TBR books before the clock runs out on 2013.



Goal:
Nook books/Net Galley 35 Books off my Nook or NetGalleys downloaded to my Nook, or Books on my PC Kindle App.
Audio books 35 - Books downloaded to my PC/MP3
ARDs 35 - Books that are already sitting on my shelves or ARCs/ERs awarded to me in 2013.

For every BOMB exploded in 2012 I put $1 in my book bank so that at the end of the year I have money for new books! I already have my wishlist created so before the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, I will place my order with Barnes & Noble for my Nook acquisitions and will have additional books to count. The book bank total may be added to if I receive any gift cards for Christmas.

I decided to add a point goal as well.
Since I want to achieve 105 books my goal needs to be higher than that for points, so I'm going to try for 200. This is an experiment and we'll see how it goes.

Books acquired in 2011 are worth two points.
Books acquired in 2010 are worth three pts.
Books acquired in 2009 are worth four pts.
Books acquired before 2009 are worth five pts.
Non- Fiction book is 4 pts.
For every book over 400 pages 1 point per 100 pages

Chèli, your tickers are excellent. I also need to think a bit more about freebies, because they can get out of control. I should have a ticker for that too!

Cheli, I LOVE all of your stats and tickers! I too have a problem with free books - but on reflection, a lot of the freebies really aren't that great. I always ask myself if I'd want to spend cold hard cash on it if it wasn't free, and since I rarely do, I take and request fewer of them. A small thing, but it helps! (Plus, I'd love to get an e-reader this year so I can get rid of some of the classics that I feel like I should read and might not get around to for awhile - I'd save quite a bit of shelf space, but can't justify just getting rid of them because I might read them at some point.)

Laura, that's been part of what I've done with my e-reader, or at least tried to. I tell myself that if it's available on Project Gutenburg or other public domain site, the paper copy needs to come off my shelf. Unfortunately, I'm resistant to that logic in part because, face it, those old classics look good on the shelf . . . I'd hate for visitors to think I only read mysteries and horror novels . . . LOL

That is true, and a good point. I figure that if it's an older/very nice-looking copy I'll save it, but if it's just a regular old paperback it can go. This is, obviously, all theoretical still since I don't have an e-reader. But I do worry a bit about looking like a literary dolt, shelf-wise. :)

Laura - another reason for the e-reader for the classics is that usually they are chunksters and the e-readers are lighter. I have the Nook Touch with Glow and a Kindle Fire - my preference is the Nook because it is lighter and easier to use IMO. However, the Kindle Fire does have Internet access while Nook is just a reader.

Well, I finally finished When Christ and His Saints Slept. It's been on my shelf for almost 2 years borrowed from my sister Tina. I sure wish this had been on my Nook or Kindle because with 700+ pages it kept giving me a hand cramp, but it was worth it - 4¾Stars!

Sounds like it may be time to get it for the NOOK if I ever hope to read it!

for you definitely the Nook or Kindle - It took me this long to read (3 weeks) mainly because I had to stop because of the hand cramp. Do you want it back? I'll send you the money for the Nook version if you want and I'll keep this.

**tears rolling my cheeks** MY PC IS VERY SICK!

The PC doctor has just called with the bad news. ***SOB*** He cannot get the data from my hard drive (150+ audiobooks and all my photos) without sending it off to a specialist. It could take up to 3 weeks ***SOB, BIG SOB*** before my baby is well and can come home to me. It could also cost up to $1,500 to recover the data. ***HUGE WAIL***

In the meantime, I have got to try to recreate my working file for my reading reviews and book selection. My old PC that I am using now, is much slower, smaller screen, and on an old Operating System. I feel like I'm back in the dark ages already. :-(

So sorry to hear about your PC being sick Cheli. I hope you are able to retrieve your data without too much delay, and maybe you'll get a surprise about cost.

When a techie phoned me about the two days he'd spent trying to fix my laptop, he claimed the delay was his fault and there would be no charge. That's pretty typical around this small town/rural area.

While you are at a loose end you can play with your beautiful grandchildren :-)

Oh how gutting! I have never thought about backing up home computer. Hope it isn't as expensive as he anticipates. They usually give the worst scenario...one could buy so many books for that! Sending positive boks. Read lots of books while it's gone for consolation.:-)

Well, the verdict is in on my PC and the news is not good.
The hard drive failed and to recover my pictures and data files it will be $1,300 and 4-8 weeks. That's just the data files. However, if they can't recover what I want/need, I can refuse the files and it will only cost me $250.

The pictures are what I really want so I told them to go ahead with the recovery but now I have to get a new PC because this one won't be back and functioning anytime soon (no software programs until I can find the keys from 3½ years - do you think that's going to happen?), my backup computer is lacking some of the programs that I need for the projects that I use for my other activities and I'm not sure I want to trust it again. I think I need to sell some of my stock to pay for this expenditure unless I can find a good deal out there.

WHAT A BUMMER!!

I guess it could be worse, I could be without a PC completely, right?

Well, I guess I'll be working on recreating the ROOT list for the next week so that I'll be ready for the end of February.

WOW, that's a lot of money!! I would want my pictures back too!

Finding keys of software would be an archaeological enterprise around here!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear the recovery will cost so much. Think about it before shelling out. Are there others who may have copies of your photos? Could you retrieve enough to satisfy?
