Hi there! I am both a newby and a non-native speaker so please bear with me, if you will. I have been re-reading M&C recently and find I have grown a tad rusty re naval terms, POB's writing style and the like. As such, I find it hard to interprets what is surely a pretty straightforward passage of the book: when in the Sophie's very first "test run" around Port Mahon Jack manages to break the mast, was he doing this on purpose (I.e. to get a better/faster ship after repairment) or was he just testing how much the Sophie could run, and ended up busting it? Gracias!

It's been a while since I last read M&C, but I believe he did it on purpose, and that yes, he thought the new equipment would make the ship faster.

But don't feel bad for not understanding; I don't think the passage is straightforward at all.
