I was delighted to read that Kathleen Jamie has won the poetry award in this year's Costa prizes for The Overhaul. She's been my writer of the past year: I've read both her books of essays Findings and Sightlines - mainly about the natural world, like the poetry - and Among Muslims, an earlier travel book, as well as the poetry book. Jamie has a perceptive eye for the natural world, and great sensitivity about human relationships with it. She writes with an unfussy precision which gives the prose pieces a poetic edge. I'm looking forward to acquiring her earlier poetry collections to brighten the coming year.

She's great -- I'd highly recommend Jizzen and The Tree House. And now I'm off to add The Overhaul to my wishlist ...
